After the OxyContin marketing push with the backing of the JCAHCO and the AMA who screamed at physicians like me that we were unnecessarily leaving patients in agony, so many Americans were addicted. Then when healthcare organizations started accusing physicians of enabling addicts without giving a good alternative, many addicts resorted to heroin. After that, Mexico figured out how to make cheap fentanyl. This book is the excellent sequel to Sam Quiñones’s Dream Land and The Least of Us. Not a self help book! An overview of the icebergs of addiction in the sea of society, business, and cartels. Excellent.

A glimpse at an important person I didn't know.
Revisado: 12-02-22
I have enjoyed many of Isaacson's books, but this one stands out because it paints a portrait of an important contemporary American scientist. Despite being a physician, and having followed the COVID epidemic in favor the best practice for my patients, I still had never heard Jennifer Doudna's name. A Nobel Prize winner, as well as other premium accolades, and a pivotal developer of modern vaccines and genetic engineering, she is certainly deserving of the praise Isaacoson gives her. Undoubtedly her work will help us address challenging genetic disasters like cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, Tay-Sachs, and a miriad of other single- and, maybe even later, multi-gene mutational errors that result in unimaginable suffering. Thank you Walter for this eye-opening work which reads like a fictional thriller and which rendered me incapable of removing my earbuds.

Scripturally accurate Christian fiction
Revisado: 09-27-22
This story is believable and at the same time holds to scripture. It is rapid paced, comfortable language, and captures interest all the way along. The characters are colorful, the conflict is suspenseful, and the outcome surprising and yet realistic.

Historia
For almost a century, historians could only speculate about the role Grigory Rasputin played in the downfall of tsarist Russia. But in 1995 a lost file from the state archives turned up, a file that contained the complete interrogations of Rasputin's inner circle. With this extensive and explicit amplification of the historical record, Edvard Radzinsky has written a definitive biography, reconstructing in full the fascinating life of an improbable holy man who changed the course of Russian history.

Spectacular view of obscure history
Revisado: 05-24-22
I knew nothing about this pre-Lennon figure except his name. I knew there was mystery surrounding his existance and his importance in making state decisions in old Czarist Russia. But I had no idea to what level he had risen. The book is well written, on the level of David McCullough and Walter Isaacson, logical, and engaging. A great read about a figure hidden in twentieth century history. I am so glad I listened to this (twice).

Good story should have been a full-length novel
Revisado: 01-18-22
A great story line that is just getting going when the last portion is concentrated into a short conclusion. This would have been wonderful had it been full length. I wanted all the details of the second half of the story. Having read other books by Melinda Leigh, she writes great full-length mysteries.

A mystery in a little town.
Revisado: 01-18-22
I am biased toward little towns, which complicate mysteries because everybody knows everybody. This story involves a woman running from a sleezy investment group and lands by accident in a little town which boths embraces her while she embraces it. Then, can she avoid the SEC agents searching for her, can she save the little newspaper, and can she manage the home town suitor she meets. A great read (or listen). Kim Packard delivers her story with gentle, flowing language, engaging action, and heartwarming side-stories. If you like this, read (or listen to) Dier's Club.

A ture thriller mystery with a twist
Revisado: 01-18-22
This book is a great mystery. There are twists and turns which keep you guessing about who did what, and the pages keep turning. Then at the end, just when it seems like the characters are falling into place, and unexpected swap twists the whole story on it's ear. I loved it. Character development is good, the language is gentle, flows well, and no suspension of reality is required. An excellent read (or, in my case, listen), Reminds me of Kimberly Packard.

Amazing performace of a brilliant story
Revisado: 09-15-21
The idea that Mona Lisa was stolen and that the one in the Louvre may be a copy results in a story with twists and turns forcing you to listen, even when it is late and you have to work the next day. But more than that, Ballerini's reading with authentic accent in French and Italian is fabulous, goes at a pace which matches the pace of the story. Highly recommended. At least as good as Dan Brown.
