Strictly because I hate to leave a thing unfinished, I will complete books and films that I don’t even like. Often. I could only stomach an hour of this. I also hate to give a poor review but I cannot let the algorithm suggest similar content to me. And I am a fan of Bronson Pinchot! I wanted to love this. I love mysteries and world building and supernatural stories. I should love this. But for me, top 5 worst books ever. The Showgirls of post-apocalyptic fiction.

If you love verbose descriptions of unappealing characters that seem to not have redeeming traits, this is the book for you.

I recognize this book has amazing reviews and is touted as a cult classic and I genuinely wanted to understand why. But life is too short for this level of ick. My apologies to the fans; let’s agree to disagree.

This was a proper epic tale with a range of characters and motivations. Sometimes it felt like a lesson in writing—in the best way. If I have to complain about something it was that Andrews decided not to explain characters’ motivations at times and it felt like withholding a secret, especially male characters that read a little too much like women want them to be rather than the products of society they are, that we all are. But unquestionably a solid 5/5 for me.

Enjoy the way the author handles impacts of our world on an rpg one. The “race” interactions, politics, and culture clashes are playful but earnest. Great fun series

Every bit as good the original books in the series, this prequel brings new life and depth to a mysterious and beloved character from that series. Looking SO forward to more!

This is scifi at it’s best—social commentary on culture and humanity via artfully written literature a la Shelley and Stoker. The story arc is not predictable or overly formulaic. Excellent production and performance as well. Can I give it an extra star?

Great concept, questionable delivery

The concept for this book is original to me and the magic and science behind it seem well-thought-out and organized. I liked it so much I really debated whether to rate it higher. However the management of relationships and attempts at a female perspective were cliche, at best. For example, pubescent girls are just as curious about their bodies as boys, but the way this described it seemed for the entertainment of male readers or male fantasy alone rather than anything approaching real female interactions. Similarly, the author relied heavily on ethnic stereotypes for regional characters in a troubling way. Still, the dialogue was better than many fantasy novels. While I do want to know what happens next, these 2 concerns make me uncertain if I will look for a sequel. Performance was quite good -only annoyed it lacked enough treble to play clearly in my car.

This reverent reimagining of Authorian Legend is everything other reviews promised. Characters have depth, the story is both as if it could have been and a mystical too. High praise for Zimmer Bradley and for Porter too!

Great book for all ages. Fast paced and likable characters - in the vein of Lemony Snicket meets Hardy Boys with a dash of Narnia.

What did you like best about this story?

Marillier perfectly balances a fictionalized historical experience with a realm of fantasy. I can only describe it as the love child of Game of Thrones & the Outlander series (not of the actual authors, of course). It less romantic than Outlander, but also focused on a female protagonist who navigates the supernatural and everyday life and survival. It is less epic and more focused than Game of Thrones, revolving around a particular family. Add a dash of fairytale formula and voila.

What does Terry Donnelly bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I think the pacing is perfect - I feel fully immersed into the world. Others have criticized it as too slow, but just right for me.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but it was much too long to do it. I went looking for excuses to listen more, rather than just during my normal walk routine.

Any additional comments?

I would readily recommend this to anyone who likes either series mentioned previously.
