Historia
In vivid and graceful prose, Lucette Lagnado recreates the majesty and cosmopolitan glamour of Cairo in the years before Gamal Abdel Nasser’s rise to power. With Nasser’s nationalization of Egyptian industry, her father, Leon, a boulevardier who conducted business in his white sharkskin suit, loses everything and departs with the family for any land that will take them. The poverty and hardships they encounter in their flight from Cairo to Paris to New York are strikingly juxtaposed against the beauty and comforts of the lives they left behind.

Painful pronunciation of French words
Revisado: 11-16-22
I really like the reader but,(and this is huge), someone should have told her how to pronounce the French words!!! There is quite a bit of French in this story and she has had no experience on how to pronounce any of the words! It took me out of the story in a jarring manner. It would have been an easy fix and I'm surprised that whoever proof-listens to the book, didn't notice this?
Story is great but the reading was a real problem for me.

Can't figure out why this is so popular?
Revisado: 12-18-20
So formulaic, predictable. Reminds me of tv shows where everything wraps up neatly. Every character stays in his/her lane and you know that all will end well for the protagonist . A big nothing from my point of view, don't bother reading this.

Bitter, party of one.
Revisado: 01-23-17
What would have made Hidden Bodies better?
Not such a bitter misogynistic viewpoint!
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Santino Fontana?
Someone who didn't read in such a dramatic clipped delivery.

Poorly produced but great story
Revisado: 06-10-15
What made the experience of listening to We Survived... At Last I Speak the most enjoyable?
Fascinating story told by author
Any additional comments?
Very amateur production. Many edits where a word or two got added or spliced in. Not up to the standard of most audible books. Frustrating and distracting.

Historia
What would life be like for a Black boy growing up in Nazi Germany? This unprecedented autobiography answers that question with the spellbinding true story of Hans J. Massaquoi’s life in Hamburg during the height of Hitler’s regime. Hans is the son of a Black Liberian diplomat father and a white German mother. His father returns to Africa at the beginning of the war, leaving them behind in poverty without the means to flee. Within this tense atmosphere, increasingly violent Nazi policies and Allied bombing raids make Hans and his mother’s lives a day-to-day survival struggle.

This is one of the most incredible stories I've ever heard! Such a different perspective than most WW II memoirs. I couldn't put it down! A must listen for anyone, really!
