Well Done
Revisado: 09-20-23
I love how he handled the question of Christianity in the workplace and in our current cultural disrespect of spiritual belief systems that are not all inclusive. Definitely want to read more of his writings. While I am not sure if this author is a Christian, he dealt with this issue respectfully. And, portrayed Christians as human, mistakes and flaws. It was very thought provoking in terms of what the difference between Italian mafia, Russian Mafia, Cartels, and such as to what motivates them and how that impacts how they organize, and behave.

Back in the day
Revisado: 09-15-23
I love the setting of these stories. Being a resident in Lamar county, I easily visualize the story. Takes me back to my childhood of party lines, lighting cigarettes with the car’s cigarette lighter, a very different way of life. Good to see real characters, the Christian Grandma, good and corrupt police, telling it like it is.

Historia
Nora Brown teaches high school English and lives a quiet life in Seattle with her husband and six-year-old daughter. But one November day, moments after dismissing her class, a girl’s face appears above the students’ desks—“a wild numinous face with startling blue eyes, a face floating on top of shapeless drapes of purples and blues where arms and legs should have been. Terror rushes through Nora’s body—the kind of raw terror you feel when there’s no way out, when every cell in your body, your entire body, is on fire—when you think you might die.”

Seattle and childhood trauma
Revisado: 07-09-22
I would have enjoyed this book more if it was placed in a fictitious town in Wa or the PNW. Having actually lived in Seattle, on capital Hill, in 1997 and dealing with the very same issues the protagonist faces, the author could have done better research. It was not that snowy in Seattle during the winter, so that tripped me up a lot. As well as the hospital being Seattle General. If the author is going to use real landmarks, and a real city, then be consistent and use the real hospital name like Harbor View or the U W Hospital. ( but if the main character lived on Capital Hill she would have more than likely been taken to Harbor View or one of the other Hospitals on Pill Hill.) The author includes many Seattle staples like Pikes Place Market, the waterfront and piers on the Sound with the ferries even mentions Spuds on Alki Beach. So it was very hard for me to visualize a Seattle known to be a very cold, wet, rainy city in the winter, not at all seeing snow regularly in the winter like Chicago. And then unrealistic portrayal of the patients out-Patient therapist seeing and doing therapy on an in patient unit. That just doesn’t happen. If she was going to keep her story consistent it would have been better to have this take place in a fictitious city or have done more research so that this story would fit nicely into the real Seattle of 1997.

One of the first modern detective Genre

So enjoyed this book written in 1850 by a male that had progressive views of women for his day. The one thing I would have changed would be to have multiple readers for each narrative voice.

In the wasteland of commercial culture that is future America, police are operated not by government but by private companies. In Seattle, that role is filled by Civil Protection, and Daniel Gray is a detective in Homicide Solutions. What used to be considered an important - even glamorous - department for public police is very different for the corporate species, and Gray finds himself stuck in a dead end job. That is, until the Spine Thief arrives. When a serial killer begins harvesting the spinal tissue of corporate employees all over the city, Detective Gray finds himself plunged into the first truly major case of his career.

Rough language
Revisado: 03-24-16
Did not care for the foul language, while I understand that police locker room language can make a sailor blush I do not appreciate paying to listen to someone using the Lords name in vain or cursing and carring on. Made a good story distasteful

Misleading title
Revisado: 12-03-15
The reality of research spending a lot of time thinking you are making head way to answer your hypothesis, so you push to get the answer only to find that answer elusive. For me this book was disappointing, having had a career in clincal medicine research, I could appreciate the work, however, the title is misleading. This is dry clincical read. Too much like reading articles in medical journals. Entertaining it was not.

I loved it. Being a Seattle native and a father who was stationed there while in the Coast Guard I felt as if I watched the whole ordeal. I loved learning what the numbers of a run way mean. This is my favorite of the Cooper series. Enjoy Frank Peretti narrating his own works as it makes them come alive.
