Historia
The Nazi regime preached an ideology of physical, mental, and moral purity. But as Norman Ohler reveals in this gripping new history, the Third Reich was saturated with drugs. On the eve of World War II, Germany was a pharmaceutical powerhouse, and companies such as Merck and Bayer cooked up cocaine, opiates, and, most of all, methamphetamines, to be consumed by everyone from factory workers to housewives to millions of German soldiers.

A fascinating listen for any fan of history!
Revisado: 07-06-23
I knew a bit about the drug usage by the Nazis during World War II, but even still I was absolutely blown away by the realities discussed in this book and had no idea the actual extent that they were used throughout society at large in Germany during that era. A fascinating examination of a little studied side of one of the most pivotal moments/eras of human history. Highly recommend. Also, as far as the recording goes, I thought the performance was very good. There are German words throughout here or there and I appreciate that the narrator pronounced them correctly. One certainly expects as much for a professional, but you'd be surprised how often that kind of thing gets overlooked. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone, even if you aren't typically a history buff, I think it's so interesting that anyone would enjoy it. Of course, it is about one of the darkest periods in human history, so do keep in mind that some parts are disturbing.

Historia
In Las Vegas to cover a motorcycle race, Raoul Duke (Thompson) and his attorney Dr. Gonzo (inspired by a friend of Thompson) are quickly diverted to search for the American dream. Their quest is fueled by nearly every drug imaginable and quickly becomes a surreal experience that blurs the line between reality and fantasy. But there is more to this hilarious tale than reckless behavior, for underneath the hallucinogenic facade is a stinging criticism of American greed and consumerism.

Outrageously funny, excellently narrated
Revisado: 08-26-19
Fear and Loathing is one of those books that you can't stop once you start. The story itself is hilarious and intriguing, and the narration of this edition is absolutely perfect -- complementary in every way. I found myself laughing out loud multiple times throughout. Absolutely would recommend to anyone.

Slow start, but finished strong
Revisado: 08-23-19
I wasn't quite hooked from the beginning, it kind of dragged on a bit for awhile. I definetly was not a fan of Amory, the main character, much during the first part of the book, and even at the end there's things about him I don't like, but he certainly improves quite a bit. The narrator was fine when reading the standard text, but the way he read dialogue was very distracting -- *especially* his attempt at speaking in a woman's voice. This was mostly made up for by the fact that I couldn't stop imagining that Mark Corrigan from Peep Show was reading to me, as the narrator quite sounds like the actor. Overall, it was enjoyable and worth the few hours of time.

Though Jack Kerouac began thinking about the novel that was to become On the Road as early as 1947, it was not until three weeks in April 1951, in an apartment on West 20th Street in Manhattan, that he wrote the first full draft that was satisfactory to him.

Absolutely an incredible novel with beautiful writing, Kerouac transports you through the story of his life with his words. The narration is well done and only adds to it.
