Historia
Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

Not what I expected, but pleasantly surprised
Revisado: 02-08-21
I went in to this book completely blind. I expected a book that would more closely follow and focus on the actual witches with a lighthearted tone. What I got was instead more like a history book describing the dark goings on around the Mayfair family. The first 40 ish hours were really good but after that it slowly degenerated into a hot mess with one of the characters making a complete 180 in attitude and personality which completely ruining the experience.

Historia
The dream chooses the dreamer, not the other way around - and Lazlo Strange, war orphan and junior librarian, has always feared that his dream chose poorly. Since he was five years old he's been obsessed with the mythic lost city of Weep, but it would take someone bolder than he to cross half the world in search of it. Then a stunning opportunity presents itself in the person of a hero called the Godslayer and a band of legendary warriors, and he has to seize his chance or lose his dream forever.

Meandering but great
Revisado: 03-06-20
Wonderful book with some minor flaws. It had a pacing problem towards the end, where it also started pumping out clichés left and right. Dialogue, while always great to listen to, would sometimes linger on something longer than it needed.
Characters were all wonderful. It's impressive how much one can empathise with the main antagonist whilst also loathing them. There is one notable exception here.
**STORY SPOILER**
The main characters empathy towards the godsborn when told about what the godslayer did to them, while in character, made him totally forget about the suffering the people of weep had to endure under the Gods and it was very weird how he totally flipped on an issue when another character blatantly told him about the issue and how much it troubled them.

Lacking character motivations and skipping story
Revisado: 01-31-20
While the world was enjoyable and fun to get to know there was a distinct lack of character motivations, especially for our main heroine. The actions they take come out of nowhere and there is next to no build up for big story beats. Many times I found myself wondering if I had somehowed missed 5 hours of book somewhere in the middle.
It also took the book around 4 hours to get going.
As I mentioned earlier, the main heroine doesn't really motivate her actions and I hate to say it, but she gives me the feeling of being a mary sue. Not as a author insert, but as a character that can do everything and anything without any significant effort or setback.
If you're interested in a slower book with a story that doesn't revolve around a world ending event in an interesting world, give this book a try.

Three years after her fateful journeys through the forbidding mountains of Vystrana, Mrs. Camherst defies family and convention to embark on an expedition to the war-torn continent of Eriga, home of such exotic draconian species as the grass-dwelling snakes of the savannah, arboreal tree snakes, and, most elusive of all, the legendary swamp-wyrms of the tropics. The expedition is not an easy one.

Revisado: 10-09-19
Major Spoiler!
So you're telling me in a world where we have fusion drives, gauss cannons and extremely advanved detection techniques that painting a rock and slapping a rocket on it is enough to destroy the earth? It's so stupid it tainted everything about the series. I finished the book and started the sequel but that one plot point is so unfathomably stupid I can't enjoy the books anymore.

A revolution brewing for generations has begun in fire. It will end in blood. The Free Navy - a violent group of Belters in black-market military ships - has crippled the Earth and begun a campaign of piracy and violence among the outer planets. The colony ships heading for the 1,000 new worlds on the far side of the alien ring gates are easy prey, and no single navy remains strong enough to protect them. James Holden and his crew know the strengths and weaknesses of this new force better than anyone.
