what a read what a listen!
Revisado: 08-07-18
We listened to this book on a week-long road trip back and forth. This was a treasure and the first time we had listened to McCammon. The rich images of my own childhood came flooding back to make this reality amazing.

Historia
On paper, Chris Brennan looks perfect. He's applying for a job as a high school government teacher, he's ready to step in as an assistant baseball coach, and his references are impeccable. But everything about Chris Brennan is a lie. Susan Sematov is proud of her son Raz, a high school pitcher so athletically talented that he's being recruited for a full-ride scholarship to a Division I college, with a future in major-league baseball. But Raz’s father died only a few months ago, leaving her son in a vulnerable place where any new father figure might influence him for good, or evil.

Enjoyed this Scottolini story as well.

Good story, first twenty four chapters had me hating the central character and wondering who was going to emerge as the real hero.

Historia
People say Beartown is finished. A tiny community nestled deep in the forest, it is slowly losing ground to the ever encroaching trees. But down by the lake stands an old ice rink, built generations ago by the working men who founded this town. And in that ice rink is the reason people in Beartown believe tomorrow will be better than today. Their junior ice hockey team is about to compete in the national semifinals, and they actually have a shot at winning.

Historia
Lo Blacklock, a journalist who writes for a travel magazine, has just been given the assignment of a lifetime: a week on a luxury cruise with only a handful of cabins. The sky is clear, the waters calm, and the veneered, select guests jovial as the exclusive cruise ship, the Aurora, begins her voyage in the picturesque North Sea. At first Lo's stay is nothing but pleasant: The cabins are plush, the dinner parties are sparkling, and the guests are elegant. But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, and gray skies fall.

So slow at first. Character exploration was so deliberately detailed we almost quit. Finally plot appears and, struggling, carries character thru what ends up an okay story.

Historia
We expect our judges to be honest and wise. Their integrity and impartiality are the bedrock of the entire judicial system. We trust them to ensure fair trials, to protect the rights of all litigants, to punish those who do wrong, and to oversee the orderly and efficient flow of justice. But what happens when a judge bends the law or takes a bribe? It’s rare, but it happens. Lacy Stoltz is an investigator for the Florida Board on Judicial Conduct. She is a lawyer, not a cop, and it is her job to respond to complaints dealing with judicial misconduct.

Good till chapter 30ish...
Revisado: 11-18-16
Like the story as it began....then around the resolution point everything played out so expectedly Tha I began to yawn and yearn for something ti surprise me. Went from plot with suspense to platitudes about characters...immersed in a legal lecture-like description of the takedown of 30+ characters.

Outspoken and fearless, Deborah has faith in God but struggles to see the potential her own life holds. As an Israelite woman, she'll marry, have a family, and seek to teach her children about Adonai - and those tasks seem to be more than enough to occupy her time. But God has another plan for her. Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

Something about the disconcerted optimism drew me to Mark Watney. I enjoyed the geeky framework the story built around his personality.

Fantastic...so excited about movie coming out.
Revisado: 11-20-12
If you could sum up Life of Pi in three words, what would they be?
I listened to this audible book in 2003. It was probably my fifth book to listen to, and it became one of my all time favorites. The pace is surprisingly great with a tension line that runs throughout the development of the characters in that big open sea. Great.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The tiger was my favorite character. He was so central to the story movement.
Which scene was your favorite?
Flying fish scene.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I did cry. Tears came to my eyes at the end of the book, not at any particular moment, just a gratefulness for the deepness of the story.

Historia
During World War II, a family finds life turned upside-down when the government opens a Japanese internment camp in their small Colorado town. After a young girl is murdered, all eyes turn on the newcomers. Rennie has just turned thirteen and until this time, life has pretty much been predictable and fair. But the winds of change are coming, and with them, a shift in her perspective and a discovery of secrets that can destroy even the most sacred things. Part thriller, part historical novel, Tallgrass by Sandra Dallas is a riveting exploration of the darkest—and best—parts of the human heart.

Close to home...
Revisado: 02-08-11
With an internment camp just about 60 miles away from us in Arkansas, and the history of it so familiar here, this was a special treat to us. We loved this novel because it opened the lives up in the history of places like this. A great story and slightly different from some of her other novels...this one was close to home in time and geography, and also in comparison to issues today with cultural stigmas.
