Historia
Here is the story of Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, who, from her place in the store, watches carefully the behavior of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass on the street outside. She remains hopeful that a customer will soon choose her. Klara and the Sun is a thrilling book that offers a look at our changing world through the eyes of an unforgettable narrator, and one that explores the fundamental question: What does it mean to love?

So many questions…Klara does her best
Revisado: 11-19-23
I’ve been a fan since I read The Buried Giant. Ishiguro does not give all the information and raises more questions than he answers but allows you to draw your own conclusions. I love the slow meandering development of the story and characters. As an artificial friend to a young teen Klara rightly doesn’t have all the answers and is learning about the world herself. Josie & Klara grow together. This is seen in how she views and categorizes what she sees, and the decisions she makes based on her programming & ability to learn. The issues of empathy, what makes a person a person and the role of parents are all raised in a contextless dystopian future where the parents seem more childlike than the teens themselves. Klara’s ultimate fate is sad but no less than we’d probably expect. The narration was good but accents improbable in places - but perhaps being out of context was the point…. I’d listen to this again.

How to find the accompanying pdf
Revisado: 09-03-21
I have not listened to this yet but saw several reviewers commenting on the lack of visual charts. If you open the book details full screen on your device (I am using Audible app on IPhone) and tap the 3-dot menu button (top right on app) it will open a menu where ‘Accompanying PDF’ is listed. Tap and the pdf opens. AUDIBLE TEAM - I recommend a feature on the home page at regular intervals to remind users of this as it has taken me a long time to find it - no help articles popped up when I searched for pdf. Love what you do! Thanks!

Revisado: 04-18-20
I am listening to this entire series again after having read them as a child - and I’m still a fan!! Alison Larkin’s narration is great with easily identifiable voices for all the characters. Arthur Ransome’s Secret Water is set on the Suffolk coast close to Pinmill where I spent time sailing as a child with my family. I love the lively imagination & outdoor survival smarts of the Swallows, Amazon’s and Eels. It reminds me of my childhood but is a long way from today’s kids lives. Great to hear the freedom & independence of the Secret Water ‘explorers’. some of the imagination IS reminiscent of the time when this book was written (1939) so don’t expect it to entirely match today’s beliefs. But a good read nonetheless. Start with the first book (Swallows & Amazons) to get the backstory.

Historia
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

Amazing feats of Endurance...
Revisado: 02-09-20
This account of the voyages of the crew of the Endurance left me breathless & amazed. Such leadership of Shackleton & tenacity of his men. I’m stunned by the ways in which they kept going.
Simon Prebble’s performance is wonderful, his character voices and tone matched perfectly to the times of 1916.
There is nothing I can add other than you MUST listen to this. It is an inspiration.

Timeless classic - loved it!
Revisado: 12-31-19
Full of imagination- anyone interested in adventure, sailing or the outdoor life would love this book. Yes, the context and references are in keeping with the time it was written, but it is still thrilling & exciting for young & old alike. I loved these books as a kid & thoroughly enjoyed the narrators performance - also in keeping with the time period! All kids love hearing how other kids deal with adventure - how they lived & what they ate. Tons of vivid detail here. Try it!

Silly old Bear!
Revisado: 12-31-19
I’m a lifetime lover of Winnie-the-Pooh & his 100-acre friends. It’s a great way to de-stress! They make me smile, laugh & cry. A wonderful compliment to my meditation & sleep apps! The performance is great from the all-star cast. It brings back memories without being childish. I took one star off simply because it is not clear that the dramatisation is abridged, but not so much that the story or sentiment is affected. For young and old, this is a book you’ll come back to over & over. Well worth that 1 credit!

Historia
Hendrik Groen may be old, but he is far from dead and isn't planning to be buried any time soon. Granted, his daily strolls are getting shorter because his legs are no longer willing, and he has to visit his doctor more than he'd like. Technically speaking he is...elderly. But surely there is more to life at his age than weak tea and potted geraniums? Hendrik sets out to write an exposé: a year in the life of his care home in Amsterdam, revealing all its ups and downs.

Surprisingly good!
Revisado: 11-20-19
This book was quietly entertaining & more than once I burst out laughing. I did not expect to enjoy the subject matter so much - but the translation was so full of British-isms it made me chuckle. It really brought the personalities of the Oldies club to life. Derek Jacobi does an excellent job of narrating Hendrik - with a great sense of emotion in his sunset years. The only thing I was disappointed in is that he doesn’t also narrate the next book (no offense). This is definitely on my listen-again list.

Historia
"You've long set your heart against it, Axl, I know. But it's time now to think on it anew. There's a journey we must go on, and no more delay..." The Buried Giant begins as a couple set off across a troubled land of mist and rain in the hope of finding a son they have not seen in years. Sometimes savage, often intensely moving, Kazuo Ishiguro's first novel in nearly a decade is about lost memories, love, revenge, and war.

Thought provoking
Revisado: 10-27-19
I loved this book. I can’t review it without spoilers, but just to say that the glacial pace some readers complain about brings depth of character to two protagonists who cannot remember their own past. Relax, take the time to listen & lose yourself in another world and this book will intrigue you all the way to it’s thought provoking ending.

Historia
Lois Clary is a software engineer at General Dexterity, a San Francisco robotics company with world-changing ambitions. She codes all day and collapses at night, her human contact limited to the two brothers who run the neighborhood hole-in-the-wall from which she orders dinner every evening. Then, disaster! Visa issues. The brothers quickly close up shop. But they have one last delivery for Lois: their culture, the sourdough starter used to bake their bread. She must keep it alive, they tell her—feed it daily, play it music, and learn to bake with it.

Quirky & fun!
Revisado: 08-11-19
I enjoyed this book immensely. It is a lighter story though it does make you think about the role of tech & human connections. Robin Sloan has a gift for quirky tales with a twist that keep you guessing. If you have never read ‘Mr Penumbra’s 24hour Bookstore’ you really should. The narration was great and she brought to life a rather nerdy shy girl that you could really imagine. The book is amusing & if you eat, enjoy, cook or bake food then you’ll like this tale. I’m off to set-up a sourdough starter - you go buy this book!!!

Great for your imagination!
Revisado: 08-03-19
Whether you are interested in tech or even just a good old fashioned mystery story this is a great listen. This story is intriguing and if you spend a lot of time online - thought provoking. The story line unfolds with twists and turns. I enjoyed Yara Shahidi’s measured pace. True she does not bring a whole cast of different voices for the characters but she has a way of building suspense into the shortest dialogue. I liked that this felt like a book read by a story teller rather than a dramatic play for radio. The world Stan Lee & Kat Rosenfield created will have your imagination working overtime. I don’t want to give away the plot but am hoping that there are more installments- it feels like we are just getting going! Highly recommend this book!
