Historia
Nikki hasn’t seen her grandmother in years. So when the elder calls out of the blue with an urgent request for Nikki to visit her in the hills of western North Carolina, Nikki hesitates only for a moment. After years of silence in her family, due to a mysterious estrangement between her mother and grandmother, she’s determined to learn the truth while she still can. But instead of answers about the recent past, Mother Rita tells Nikki an incredible story of a kingdom on this very mountain, and of her great-great-great grandmother, Luella, who would become its queen.

What an incredible story!!! A must read!!!
Revisado: 04-18-25
Dolen Perkins-Valdez (author of Take My Hand) has done it again! Another incredible historical fiction novel, this one less heartbreaking but no less captivating! A depiction of a true Black Kingdom in NC that produced a family whose story is a beautiful one that weaves together the heart strings of a strained family bond. The imagination and belief of a people and later the belief of its descendants created this beautiful story! Grateful for Dolen’s research and incredible storytelling! A definite must-read!!! And also beautifully narrated by Bahni Turpin & Ashley J. Hobbs!

Historia
Shy, bookish, and admittedly awkward, Lily Greene has always felt inadequate compared to the rest of her accomplished family, who strive for Black excellence. She dreams of becoming a children’s books editor, but she’s been frustratingly stuck in the nonfiction division for years without a promotion in sight. Lily finds escapism in her correspondences with her favorite fantasy author, and what begins as two lonely people connecting over email turns into a tentative friendship and possibly something else Lily won’t let herself entertain—until he ghosts her without a word.

In this ingenious, sweeping novel, Phillip B. Williams introduces us to an enigmatic woman named Saint, a fearsome conjurer who, in the 1830s, annihilates plantations all over Arkansas to rescue the people enslaved there. She brings those she has freed to a haven of her own creation: a town just north of St. Louis, magically concealed from outsiders, named Ours. It is in this miraculous place that Saint’s grand experiment—a truly secluded community where her people may flourish—takes root.

Absolutely Incredible & Worth Every Page!!
Revisado: 04-25-24
One of the best books, from start to finish! I absolutely enjoyed this novel and the fullness of it. The author did a brilliant job of weaving the characters together and tying up all loose ends that may have appeared. The story itself is beautifully narrated, as Ms. Abbott-Pratt never disappoints! This is most certainly a must read! So glad I did!!!

The author did a beautiful job conveying the stories and emotions that came with each character! The story, while heartbreaking, keeps you completely engrossed in the fictional story based loosely on Florida’s Dozier School for Boys.
