Historia
The next book in the perennially adored No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series sees Precious Ramotswe calling upon all her maternal instincts when she's faced with a two-ton case. They say it takes a village to raise a child, but can Mma. Ramotswe and the rest of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency come together to raise a pipsqueak pachyderm? We may find out in this novel. We may not. Who can say?

Argh!
Revisado: 03-30-25
The first 20 books in this series had the great good fortune to be narrated by Lisette Lecat. This book is # 21 and the new narrator, Adjoa Andoh, is a disaster. When speaking as narrator she sounds fine, but her voicing of most characters is so shrill and unpleasant that I find listening to be painful.
I doubt that I will ever be able to finish the book.
If I had paid for it I would be demanding a refund.

DS George Cross can be rude, difficult and awkward with people. But his unfailing logic and dogged pursuit of the truth means his conviction rate is the best on the force. So when his police colleagues dismiss the death of a man as a squabble among Bristol's homeless community, Detective Sergeant George Cross is not convinced.

HOORAY!
Revisado: 02-21-25
Finally, a great detective with autism. So many fictional great detectives have tragic flaws, usually alcoholism, which annoys me; I lose interest and move on.
But wait, nothing tragic about this detective; autism is his particular gift to the story. It gives freshness, depth, and insight, creating a compelling mystery.
As with most British readers, the narration is excellent.

Historia
When 14-year-old Zoe Johnson doesn't come home on a Monday night in early December, the alarm bells in Kings Lake Central police station do not ring straight away - after all, she's from the Dockmills, one of the toughest estates in the town. But for Detective Sergeant DC Smith, due to retire in just three weeks' time, there are some strange echoes of the case that has haunted him for the past 13 years. Maybe it's simply his over-developed sense of irony, or maybe, in his final days as a police officer, Smith must look once more into the eyes of a serial killer.

Left hanging
Revisado: 02-11-25
I have enjoyed all books in the series until this one.
I don't like its overly manipulated final act nor its "Stay tuned for the next installment." ending. Somehow it cheapens this work.

The Best Ever Crime Novel
Revisado: 05-21-24
Thomas Perry is amazingly talented and extraordinarily clever. I imagine that writing a novel is a long, difficult, exhausting job, but Thomas Perry must also have a great deal of fun doing it.
The Butcher's Boy is certainly terrific fun to read, reread and listen to. I have done all three and remain enchanted.

Historia
Two weeks of rest and recuperation - that's what the doctor ordered. Detective Sergeant DC Smith could listen to some music, make some of his own, and maybe even catch up on his reading; he is almost looking forward to it. And then there is a knock on the door. It's only his next-door neighbor, but it is the beginning of a sequence of events that will bring him face to face with some of the darkest episodes and the most dangerous people from his own past.

5 stars is not enough

I started reading at number one. In my opinion each book in this series is five star, and this, so far, is the best of the best. Thank you to the author, the narrator, and Audible.

Historia
Seventy-foot waves batter a torn life raft 250 miles out tosea in one of the world's most dangerous places, the Gulf Stream. Hanging on to the raft are three men, a Canadian, a Brit, and their captain, Jean Pierre de Lutz, a dual citizen of America and France. Their capsized forty-seven-foot sailboat has filled with water and disappeared below the tempestuous sea. The giant waves repeatedly toss the men out of their tiny vessel, and JP, with ninebroken ribs, is hypothermic and on the verge of death.

Historia
Up until now, the Korean War has been the black hole of modern American history. The Coldest Winter changes that. Halberstam gives us a masterful narrative of the political decisions and miscalculations on both sides. He charts the disastrous path that led to the massive entry of Chinese forces near the Yalu, and that caught Douglas MacArthur and his soldiers by surprise. He provides astonishingly vivid and nuanced portraits of all the major figures.

Historia
Alexandra Fuller tells the idiosyncratic story of her life growing up white in rural Rhodesia as it was becoming Zimbabwe. The daughter of hardworking, yet strikingly unconventional English-bred immigrants, Alexandra arrives in Africa at the tender age of two. She moves through life with a hardy resilience, even as a bloody war approaches. Narrator Lisette Lecat reads this remarkable memoir of a family clinging to a harsh landscape and the dying tenets of colonialism.
