Historia
Erik Bernstein wasn’t afraid of death. He was afraid of life. He battled with inadequacy and the feeling that he never belonged. He became an expert at deflecting intimacy to mask his shame, lies, self-doubt, and bad choices. From the time he was eleven years old, or even younger, death was never far from his mind. Needless to say, death was front of mind as he sat in the back corner of the synagogue, watching his own funeral.

A guide for Life
Revisado: 09-12-24
What a beautiful message! The main character was so real and descriptions so vivid I could see myself there, learning right along with him. It’s cliche but true - I laughed, I cried and most of all was moved to examine a few bits in my life in need of repair. And bc this is audible: the writers voice is very calming and brings out the character even more. I’m going to be listening to it again though. This time with pen and paper in hand bc there are so many nuggets of phrases worth having around the house to remind me of what I learned. Definitely worth a listen or three.

Historia
In her midforties and settled into the responsibilities and routines of adulthood, Dani Shapiro found herself with more questions than answers. Was this all life was - a hodgepodge of errands, dinner dates, e-mails, meetings, to-do lists? What did it all mean? Having grown up in a deeply religious and traditional family, Shapiro had no personal sense of faith, despite repeated attempts to create a connection to something greater.

This took me a bit of time to get into - almost felt like down shifting gears. I’m glad I stayed with it. I love the way she took the time to exam everything and I found new ways of seeing my life and where devotion already lives. Thank you for this beautiful work!

This work and Song of Achilles are my new standard for all audible fictional works. They are simply wonderful on all layers: story, word choice and phrases and performance; this narrator is stunning!

Historia
I Am, I Am, I Am is Maggie O'Farrell's astonishing memoir of the near-death experiences that have punctuated and defined her life. The childhood illness that left her bedridden for a year, which she was not expected to survive. A teenage yearning to escape that nearly ended in disaster. An encounter with a disturbed man on a remote path. And, most terrifying of all, an ongoing, daily struggle to protect her daughter - for whom this book was written - from a condition that leaves her unimaginably vulnerable to life's myriad dangers.

Revisado: 03-08-18
This is one book I’m so happy to have picked up audibly. Maggie O’Farrell’s writing is beautiful and paired with Daisy Donovan’s performance this telling is essentially brilliant. I cannot say enough great things about it. Looking forward to more work from both.

Change the voice to a book reader

The content was good, but the voice actor, although great for professional commercials, made it feel as if I was listening to one long infomercial for Reagan.

What made the experience of listening to The Signature of All Things the most enjoyable?
The performance was perfect. In fact hearing Juliet's voice now, I can't even imagine trying to read it on my own with the the voice in my head. She really brought the book alive - made the story what it is to me.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Alma. Her humanity.

Blech!
Revisado: 07-18-12
Would you try another book from E. L. James and/or Becca Battoe?
I know everyone thinks this book is great - but all I can say is yuck! I'm no prude and the sex part was whatever. I just found the relationship ridiculous. In my younger years, I spent years in and out of relationship with a control freak, and there's nothing titilating in reading about it. We could go into the whole women's lib thing, but instead - why not create stories where women do smart things and still have a lot of great sex?
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
No. I love when even the crudest author takes you into a world of fantasy, but this world wasn't even set up well. Aside from the possibility of being with a true control freak , it's all so completely ridiculous.

Historia
In 1989 Ken Follett astonished the literary world with The Pillars of the Earth, set in 12th-century England. Readers and listeners ever since have hoped for a sequel. At last, here it is. Although the two novels may be listened to in any order, World Without End also takes place in Kingsbridge, two centuries after the townspeople finished building their exquisite Gothic cathedral. The cathedral is again at the center of a web of love and hate, greed and pride, ambition and revenge.

Revisado: 07-18-12
Where does World Without End rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Ken Follett's world and characters are so intriguing. I found it hard to leave. I had headphones on day and night. My family thought I was crazy. The story in enrapturing on it's own, but add John Lee's clever narration, and you have genius. I wish everyone would hire him to read their stories. What a gifted performer! This book should get 7 stars.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Lady Philippa - I identified with the air of grace, duty and shrouding the heart - how that can all come off as cold, aloof and even snobby. But underneath all that really is a truly good and kind person.
Who was the most memorable character of World Without End and why?
Carras - I was constantly intrigued by her cleverness. I'm taking her spirit into my business.

A must read for every citizen in the western world
Revisado: 05-02-11
This books captures the unique problems faced by so much of the developing world's women, and in turn it's entire society. However unlike so many books that bring problems to light, it offers clear solutions, and some of the many challenges we face in implementing them.
Personally it has motivated and inspired me into social responsibility. At first I was stuck. As a business owner, virtual single-mom with a 4 year old and a husband in Afghanistan, short of teaching in these countries and up rooting my son, I was paralyzed with how I could help. Then I started looking from the lens of what I COULD do. I'm in Phoenix, AZ and problems of hunger trafficking and the like abound here. I searched online and found Volunteer Match (do not work for them so it's not a plug). It led me to a rescue program for refugees. I'm applying to volunteer there. And unfortunate as it is to say this, there will still be significant need in fourteen years for educators and aid in foreign land. I'll head off then.
But maybe if everyone read this book and was motivated - maybe then I'd be out of a goal.
Read it. It is powerful and life changing for our planet.
