Historia
Although less well known than his famous flight over the North Pole, Admiral Richard E. Byrd's adventures in Antarctica are just as remarkable. Wide-eyed youngsters will feel the excitement and danger as they learn about the isolated and tight little manned station where Byrd lived, separated from his crew; the temperatures that plunged to 60 degrees below zero; and Byrd's brush with death when a small stove he needed to keep warm - and stay alive - filled the air with carbon monoxide.

Extraordinary feat of endurance

An interesting story about one of Admiral Birds exploits on the south pole.
Revisado: 02-23-25
A story that dripped with gushing praise of Admiral Richard Bird, a US admiral who led to the establishment of an early scientific base on the outskirts of Antarctica. While the historic cactus in this book are factual, it dripped with so much praise for this man that I soon began to not believe it. No one is as god like and perfect as this man is painted as. Bird was a controversial man, many of his firsts have been shown to be fabrications. this book says nothing about them. there are far better accounts of this interesting, and late comment, explorer.

Historia
I wasn’t supposed to survive. The station has been hit. Everyone around me is dead. I have 11 hours of life support left and no way of contacting Earth. I’m alone. I’m stranded. I’m desperate. But I’m alive. The more of the station I explore, the surer I get that this was no accident. Someone did this, and I don't think they're finished yet.

compelling.
Revisado: 09-16-24
the story keep moving with many surprises and twists. I liked that the science was correct with a few minor liberties to keep the story moving, but Craig never has to resort to supernatural magic, he is s much better and clever writer than to have to resort to magic to bail his characters out. Everything is believable. He does tend to repeat things a bit too much, but its a minor complaint from a big fan. I'm anxious to see how they keep the bad guys from blowing up the entire planet, at least till I finish the series.

Historia
For the first time ever Roland Huntford presents each man's account of the race to the South Pole in their own words. In 1910, Robert Falcon Scott and Roald Amundsen set sail for Antarctica, each from his own starting point, and the epic race for the South Pole was on. 2010 marks the centenary of the last great race of terrestrial discovery. For the first time Scott's unedited diary entries run alongside those of Amundsen and Bjaaland, never before translated into English.

I felt like I was on each expedition.
Revisado: 07-07-24
the entry for each day was written in a casual, easy to read style. else many details of the days events and frequent musings about the beauty of the landscape. I felt as if I was a personal friend of both explorers. a real treat to read the actual journal and not a rewritten summary. what a heartbreakimg read of the last weeks of Scott's. it is hard to read the words of a man knowing he and his companions are sure to die.
the epilog is very informative and insightful.

Historia
The Last Viking unravels the life of the man who stands head and shoulders above all those who raced to map the last corners of the world. In 1900, the four great geographical mysteries - the Northwest Passage, the Northeast Passage, the South Pole, and the North Pole - remained blank spots on the globe. Within twenty years Roald Amundsen would claim all four prizes.

fair telling of an amazing life
Revisado: 06-29-24
performance was not very good. it was nearly monotone. it went from totally new topics as if it was just another word in a sentence. No pausing or changing of pace for different things in the story. A text to speech program would have more personality in the reading. It was very difficult to follow. I had to listen to each word instead of following the story. like listening to a musical performance by having to carefully pick out every single note.
The book itself was not very clear on many topics. The only way I knew the significance of even where the story line was is because I'm fairly familiar with polar exploration. Read this book as your second book about polar explorers.

Living and slaving in Fill City One, you get used to the smell. We call it the Everpresent Stink. But every once in a while, on a spring day with a breeze, it clears away enough to remind us that there is something more out there. Most Fillers' wildest dreams would be just to get past the walls and live in the mainland. But my dream? It’s a little bigger. I’m going to Mars.

Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Absolutely great book. Both high adventure and lots of interesting details about the early days of sail. This was a sort of Mutiny on the Wager, plus lots and lots of background informaiont. Clearly, Grann loves his work and it shows. He is a craftsman.

amazingly well developed new world
Revisado: 02-06-24
The readimg was very boring and monotone with no inflection in his voice. For instance, it was hard to follow back and forth dialog with every voice being presented in the same monotone speech. He would begin each new scene in the story as a continuous monotone sentence with no voice inflection or pause to indicate the characters were in a new time and surrounding. I will avoid audio books read by him.

Historia
The enthralling and often harrowing history of the adventurers who searched for the Northwest Passage, the holy grail of 19th-century British exploration. After the triumphant end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815, the British took it upon themselves to complete something they had been trying to do since the 16th century: Find the fabled Northwest Passage, a shortcut to the Orient via a sea route over Northern Canada. For the next 35 years the British Admiralty sent out expedition after expedition to probe the ice-bound waters of the Canadian Arctic in search of a route.

review of many early expeditions
Revisado: 01-07-24
this was a rapid fire review of many of the early expeditions to find the NW passage, however it was more of a cronoligy of who and when and lacked giving me a feeling that I knew the various characters, they were simply names and dates. if I was not already very familiar with the history of and familiar with many of the expeditions, I could not have finished the book. for me, it is a nice reference for a cronoligy, but not good for telling a compelling story.

Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Historia
The lives of many famous artists have been shrouded in mystery and conjecture, but none have been more controversial than the life of Vincent van Gogh. Remembered for his swirling brushstrokes and burning colors, Vincent van Gogh is today one of the best-known painters. Though his career as a painter spanned less than ten years, he produced a body of work that remains one of the most enduring in all of modern art. In his lifetime, however, he received little recognition. Today his paintings sell for countless millions, yet during his lifetime, van Gogh managed to sell just one painting.
