I honestly don't know where this book went wrong but it was all wrong. I think my main issue was the controlling, whiney, and unreasonable Mr. B. The heroine wasn't much better and after reading Tessa Dare and Sarah McClean for the last few months, returning to Julia Quinn was a sudden bump back into slow plodding storyline.

After Collin verbally abused her, pawed all over her, unromantically "proposed," and then mocked her for being so surprised she tripped and hurt herself (seriously he didn't even ask if she was ok!) all in the space of one carriage ride I was done. I couldn't finish it.

For someone who knows very little about English history around this time period there were small areas where I was completely lost in names and locations but overall it didn't detract from the story. The only thing I was disappointed about was the lack of epilogue.

The Book: Unfortunately, while I was really looking forward to this book I found myself quite disappointed. I live for Sherrilyn's immersive back stories and when it seemed she was truly on a roll she cut herself off with a rather lack luster time skip and then proceeded to give us half a book of cobbled together scenes from previous novels. I'm actually truly sad that this pairing wasn't given the time that I've seen Sherrilyn pour into previous characters. In fact, the author seems so rushed and determined to add in as many character cameos as possible the character's personalities are running together.

The Perfomance: While I will continue to be a Holter Graham fan I must lodge a small complaint about his character voices. Most of them come off as inconsistent, especially from one book to the next (I'm listening to them in order) but also from one page to the next. Their accents shift and ebb constantly but I can overlook it for the most part. My main concern is his female voices which all come off as nasally, whiny, and grating. Sometimes it's difficult to listen to. All together, Mr. Graham is an amazing voice actor and in some of his performances this was not an issue. Hopefully it won't be next time.

I'll admit, I struggled through the first part. I have a new baby and some of Acheron's past triggered my hormonal protectiveness and twisted my stomach with grief to the point that I had to actually put it down and walk away for a few hours. His later abuse triggered some memories of my own childhood which, while nowhere as bad as his, was still not fun.

I do have to say though, this book answered every question I had and with everything in life, the lows make you appreciate the highs. I love that after so long he finally found happiness and true loyalty. I know from personal experience that it is out there. I feel for you Acheron, my heart ached in so many ways while listening to this book and that's the highest praise I can give a character and a novel.

My only negative comment is that it seemed to take forever to get to Ireland but the previous reviews I read were far too harsh. I loved the lead up and feel like it helped the story flow to a graceful end. There were a few books prior that seemed to end abruptly so I applaud the wrap up of this one.

I feel like the readers still protesting Anita's emotional story line are just kidding themselves at this point. I'm here for the soap opera and you guys should know what you're getting yourself into at this point. This is book what... 20...23? C'mon, guys. If you're not interested in her relationship drama maybe you should be reading another series.

I also feel compelled to mention that I'm proud of Hamilton for her courage in this book. So far in the series she's avoided huge personal emotional blows and here in this one book she set's Anita back a lover she actually cares for and shears away another love. As an author I know just how emotional it can be to let go of a character and suffer the death yourself.

All in all, this was a great addition to the series and I'm super excited to recommend this book to anyone who loves Anita as much as I do.
