I must admit to being a bit jaded when it comes to action/mystery/thrillers. I have listened to literally hundreds of books on audible and this is my favorite of this genre. All I can say is,"Flynn, Clancy, Baldacci, and all you other favorite authors of mine, watch out! Ben Coes had outdone you all.
I have a habit of looking for errors, gross exaggerations, etc-especially if the book spends anytime on areas of my particular expertise-law, energy, wall street finance, etc. I did not find one mistake(of course, that does not mean there aren't any. As fantastic as some of the plot lines may seem, they all get tied up nicely with an end result of a heavy dose of realism and a very scary view of what could happen in America. However, as interesting as the Terrorism story line is-far more exciting to me is the way Coes makes these characters seem so very human. It is as thou I am in the story myself. The lead characters are shown as normal people with the same foibles anyone might possess-and I am talking people in the top echelon of our government. I thought I was ease dropping on conversations taking place among leaders of FBI, CIA, NSA, etc. I guess our government isn't very different from our corporate environments-same old, same old with the backstabbing, upstaging, etc. I enjoyed these meetings between top leaders of our gov/t almost as much as the non-stop action going on the same time. This was something else I truly loved about this first effort by Coes(it certainly wont be his last, if this one is any indication!)-it is multifaceted. One moment something is about to blow up, has blown up, may blow up, with believeable actions and consequences. The next moment, I am trying to figure out if the investment scenarios make sense. This is one tightly written book. No fillers. No boredom. And excellent research. And we are left with serious issues to contemplate afterwards. So-in a nutshell-Fun, exciting ride with a compelling message.

Reacher is back..Stronger than ever!!!!

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 10-21-10

Lee Child and Dick Hill are an unbeatable combination. This collaberation is reminiscent of the earlier Reacher books-and I couldn't be happier. And how better to portray that character than to give him a cavalier attitude towards all things permanent. A drifter who hitch-hikes throughout the US carrying maybe some money, a comb and toothbrush.

When he needs a change of clothes, he buys a new set and throws the old set away. (You would know this if you read all the previous Reacher books).
Not a care in the world. No responsibilities. And yet, when he stumbles upon evil doings in strange towns, he cannot just pass on by. Reacher feels compelled to tackle evil and right all wrongs before moving on.

This is the Jack Reacher I have come to love. Wow. Talk about a modern day hero. This is not your average, rich, James Bond character with fancy toys at his feet. Reacher reminds me a bit of John Wayne in those old Westerns where he always rescues the damsel in distress. Only, in this series, Reacher rescues entire communities.

I hope Lee Child never stops writing about Jack Reacher. And, of course, we could never do without Dick Hill's talent and ability to bring such a multi-faceted character to life in a big way. Thanks so much for a fabulous story. I could not put it down. The suspense kept growing right til the end. I listened to it all the way thru. Can't wait until the next book!! P.S. As someone who carries everything she owns when she travels, I spend lots of time trying to imagine making do with just what is in my pocket--never happen!!

Please don't make this the last JP Beaumont book!!

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 10-04-10

I am a HUGE fan of JA Jance. I love all her books. However, I am totally obsessed with the JP Beaumont series. I stumbled upon this great character(Beaumont) after all 14 books in the series had been written. The first book in the series was enough to hook me into the next 13 in short order!

I have watched JP Beaumont change work partners, love partners; drink too much, enter rehab, leave rehab -and have to deal with sobriety and all that temptation!

Jance has the ability to bring the reader (listener) into the story in such a big way. Of course, no great book can make it on audio without a terrific narrator-Gene Engene. He has an enticing, sexy, deep voice and yet he can do almost any other character. His other voices are quite believable-even the women-as hard as that is to accomplish!

I love Gene Engene and hope that he will once again appear as JP Beaumont. I believe there is still alot of life left in Beau, and I want him back. Thanks for a lovely series .

I got my Alex Hawke fix!!!!

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 09-28-10

I am a huge fan of this series. Im sorry the first book is not on audio tape ("Hawke"). I highly suggest this book first before listening to the audio tapes in order. It will add much to your listening pleasure and understanding. That said, I was as entertained as always with this newest offering. Warlord is my ulltimate fantasy. Alex Hawke is a character I would definitely not mind knowing in real life-handsome with charisma, insanely rich, adventurous, etc., etc. John Shea does an excellent job of narrating this book. I can't believe he isn't British. He really does a great British accent. Ambrose and Hawke sound like the real thing. My other favorite character is Stokely. My only comment is that I wish there had been more conversation between Stokely and Hawke. The two interacted together more often in previous books. The communication between the two is pure genius. I always laugh so hard I end up in tears. Although both are equally amusing in this book, I wish they had more time together. Maybe in the next book, since this one is a cliffhanger@@ I really hate to have to wait til the next book to find out what happens.
Ted Bell has a wonderful imagination. I hope he keeps on with this series. James Bond has nothing on Alex Hawke. He has a personality that women will find irresistable, and men will envy. I do not want to give away the plot. You will not be disappointed. The perfect escape !

Another exciting, fun ride with J.P. Beaumont!

Total

Revisado: 09-12-10

This is my tenth out of fourteen in the J.P. Beaumont series. It did not disappoint. It had everythingI look for in light reading entertainment-a tight, well thought out story line- witty and intelligent fun- without the gore of some detective series. Gene Engene is a gifted narrator. I love his deep, pleasant voice. I look so forward to each book in this series. I will be very sad to say goodbye to J.P. Beaumont, and all the other characters I have learned to love since reading my first J.P. Beaumont book. Thanks J.A. Jance for a wonderful series!

Wonderful series!!

Revisado: 09-12-10

I must admit I am writing this review after reading thru number ten in the series. I had to go back to the first book to let people know how much I love this author and this narrator. I stumbled upon this series while looking for a mix of light entertainment, witty style, characters I could learn to care about, excellent story lines, and a narrator who could make me forget I am listening to an audio book. Gene Engenie is such a narrator. I was suprised after listening to this first book in the series of 14, that I had not heard him before. He brings me into the story in such a way that I feel I intimately know all the characters personally. Gene has a smooth, masterful voice. He can switch back and forth between characters seamlessly. I find myself laughing , crying, and most important of all, caring about what happens to J.P. Beaumont. "Beau" is a detective with a heart. Tough when he needs to be, loving , forever mystified by the female species, Beau may be my ideal man! I probably wont write a review for every book in the series. I will rate them thou. I just want to let out a cheer for J.A. Jance, and a huge thank you for a character like no other. And for Gene Engenie, a first rate narrator who brings that character to life brilliantly and with great wit! I am getting ready to start on book #11. As I near the end of the series I am hesitant to finish. There is much to say but I do not want to ruin the story lines for anyone else.

NOW I know why it was on sale.........

Okay. Everyone has said it better than I ever could. However, since I wasted my money on this "epic" piece of trash, I still want my say. I can only assume that the great reviews are from people under the age of 16. Every time audible offers a book at a special price I get burned. Every time. I wanted to force myself to listen to the whole thing since I paid for it. I just couldnt. I kept waiting for it to get interesting but gave up in the middle of the second part. I left three and a half parts on the table wondering if I quit too soon and didn't give it a chance. But after reading the other reviews Im glad I did. There are just too many other entertaining books out there for me to waste my time on something that is depressing and uninventive. Same old, same old. Nothing new under the Sun. I am actually offended by this book. How could it possibly take 5 parts to tell a story that could probably be told in one. Next time Im offered a sale on a new book Im going to pass.

Disappointing..

Revisado: 05-28-10

Jack Reacher is my favorite book character. Lee Child is my favorite author. Dick Hill is my idol-I will read anything he narrates. That said, I eagerly awaited the arrival of the new Lee child book. It is the first time I have ever been disappointed in a Reacher book.
61 Hours is my first disappointment. The title itself led me to believe something exciting/horrific was going to occur soon in the story. The countdown began in the beginning and kept on through out the book to build the suspense. I kept waiting for the book to get going but it never left the ground. There were no surprises. It tried to hard to build non-existent suspense. Much of the story didn't make sense. Characters who were supposedly integral to ghe story were never developed to the point where I cared who they were. Jack Reacher did pretty much nothing the entire book except talk to an old woman and act as advisor to some small town cops. As the focal point, I always count on Jack Reacher for plenty of-action, humor, suspense, interesting entanglements, etc. This book portrayed Reacher as almost the shell of a man he once was. He gets off a bus and ends up staying to "help" these small town cops with the "BIG" mystery. But there is no suspense.I kept waiting for the excitement and it never came. Throughout the book I just wanted it to end. Even Dick Hill couldn't save this and he can save practically anything. Insipid plot, uninteresting characters, predictable ending. I can't believe Lee Child wrote this book. It is so out of character for him. Mr. Child I hope you will bring Jack Reacher back in your next novel. I sorely missed him in this one.

Dick Hill does it again!

Revisado: 01-23-10

This kind of fantasy story is not really my cup of tea-or so I thought~ Sometimes I select books to listen to on the basis of the narrator. Same thing here.

When I saw that Dick Hill was narrating I decided to give it a shot. After all, if he can make mysteries and thrillers come to life, why not dragons, fairies, and other creatures of the like? The book met all my expectations. It was great fun. A wonderful grown up fairy tale with some good messages for all human kind creatures. There were so many interesting characters and Dick Hill made them all come alive. When he talks about a dragon "hissing", you really feel like a dragon is hissing. Neat!

It was good for me to take a little escape from reality. I just didn't realize how much fun I would have. I really hated to see it end. I want to see what happens to these characters in the future. Who would have thought? You just never know!

Stone Barrington at the top of his game!

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 01-23-10

Stuart Woods is one of my favorite authors. I have read most of his books. My favorite character is Stone Barrington. Occasionally Stone and Dino go to Florida, but mostly they can be found drinking bourbon at Elaine's in NYC.

Here, Woods has brought Stone and Dino back to NY and I couldn't be happier. The book is tighly written with lots of wit and an excellent plot. Of course, snagging Tony Roberts as the narrator is an extra treat. Obviously, Mr. Roberts' stage experience brings listening to this audio book to another level entirely. He can even do the women's voices well-something I do not find nearly convincing even among my most treasured narrators at audible!

I was waiting to see if Mr. Woods would remember to use Stone's catch phrase, "You, Betcha!", and he did-just once to my knowledge. I was laughing and smirking my way thru the entire book.

Just when I think I might not go back for more, Stuart Woods pulls another winner out of his hat. For heavens sakes Mr. Woods please try and stick with Stone. And make New York the main attraction. Without Elaine's there is no Stone or Dino.

Thanks for going back to my favorite character. And for bringing the story to life through the narration of such a talented actor!
