Shari Lapena is fast becoming one of my favorite authors and her latest novel does not disappoint. Characters were well-developed, the story kept me guessing, and the narrator was perfect.

Not the usual predictable thriller

Characters and story are well developed. The narration is done well except it seems that many narrators see “southern accent” and read the character with a stereotypically uneducated twang. That’s really my only complaint.

National security

The story seemed a little choppy with lots of story development and then all of a sudden we were at the end. The narrator’s voice was good when he was not playing a character. Otherwise, I felt the characters were narrated in a steotypical (and annoying) manner.

Favorite Read of 2024

Excellent retelling of the story of KGB officer Oleg Gordievsky. Very long story but keeps you engaged the whole way through.

Great Twists, Meh Narration

The story has some good twists that kept me interested throughout. The narration, though, is all over the place. Multiple narrators means characters sound different at times but some of these narrators have just one voice so it’s hard to tell who’s speaking. And the Andy character’s voice always sounds so defeated and forlorn. She’s a strong woman who’s been through a lot and the voice is very victim-y. If the story hadn’t been so intriguing, I’d have returned the title.

Just say no

The narrators aren’t great. The stories aren’t great. I’m disappointed in this listen. I expected a lot from a Harlan Coben project, and this did not live up to those expectations.

Great character development

I’ve never before read/listened to a book when I didn’t even care who the killer was because I was so intrigued by getting to know all the characters. Great story, performance, and characters.

Good story, horrible narrator

Of all of Karen Cleveland’s novels, I think this story is the least detailed and suspenseful, but still excellent. I wish I’d read the book and not listened to it because the narrator for Alex was hard to listen to. It sounded like she was reading individual words and not a story. Her voice is beautiful but the way she read really put me off. I almost gave up listening more than a handful of times.

Terrible Ending

Overall, I wish I hadn’t spent money on this book. The story is underdeveloped and seems a bit soapbox-ish. The narrators are okay, except Dennis Quaid. While Quaid is a favorite as an actor, narrating an audiobook isn’t his forte. The last several chapters seem like the author just wanted to give a speech. There’s just so much wrong with this audiobook.
