Historia
Ellis Island, 1902. Francesca arrives on the shores of America, her sights set on a better life than the one she left in Italy. That same day, aspiring linguist Alma reports to her first day of work at the immigrant processing center. Ellis, though, is not the refuge it first appears thanks to President Roosevelt's attempts to deter crime. Francesca and Alma will have to rely on each other to escape its corruption and claim the American dreams they were promised.

Real Struggles And Real Hope
Revisado: 08-17-24
I liked how this book described real struggles women living in this time period would experience while also showing the ways they embraced hope and chances for new lives and new frontiers each in their own ways.

Historia
When Jenny inherits her estranged grandmother’s cottage in Sherwood Forest, she has nothing to lose - no money, no job, no friends, no family to speak of, and zero self-respect. Things can only get better.... Her grumpy but decidedly handsome new neighbour, Mack, has a habit of bestowing unsolicited good deeds on her. And when Jenny is welcomed into a rather unusual book club, life seems to finally be getting more interesting. Instead of reading, the members pledge to complete individual challenges before Christmas.

Satisfying, heartwarming, relatable
Revisado: 05-21-22
I loved this story, there were so many relatable moments of emotion and the desire to push forward to a new and better life, to become a new and better version of yourself. Mixed in were wonderful well rounded characters, humorous moments, suspense, and it ended with the romantic speech I always love at the end of a romance book. I enjoyed that while the romance was an aspect of the story it wasn't all of Jenny's story because it made her more well rounded and really most of real life isn't only one aspect. I thought the narrator did a great job trying to convey different characters and the emotions they were using in what they were saying. I'll be keeping an eye out for both the author and the narrator.

Uplifting Story
Revisado: 11-27-21
I really enjoyed this book. The narrator did well with the different voices and with conveying the characters emotions in her reading. The story was very uplifting and the author did a great job weaving a message of faith throughout the book. I found many passages that reminded me of truths about our walk with God and how to surrender our most painful emotions to Him while still being thoroughly entertained by the book's story.

Didn't Enjoy At All

Main character was shallow and pointless. Couldn't even stay awake because I really didn't care about this story.

Historia
Women have been instrumental in the success of American cinema since its very beginning. One of the first people to ever pick up a motion picture camera was a woman, as was the first screenwriter to win two Academy Awards, the inventor of the boom microphone, and the first person to be credited with the title film editor. Throughout the entire history of Hollywood women have been revolutionizing, innovating, and shaping how we make movies. Yet their stories are rarely shared. This is what film reporter Alicia Malone wants to change. Backwards and in Heels tells the history of women in film in a different way.

Film Fan Delight!
Revisado: 02-22-21
I've long been a fan of Alicia Malone's on TCM so was delighted when I found this book on Audible. This book covers the role of women in film since the start of Hollywood through a combination of biographies and essays. The biographies are entertaining and also include the individuals own words on their role and/or the role of women in film. The essays are well researched and thought provoking. Also worth mentioning is that while Alicia writes about well known aspects of women in film and very famous women in Hollywood she brings to light many aspects and women that are not as well known. She also addresses women in every aspect of Hollywood including executives, directors, cinematographers, actresses, etc. I highly recommend this book for film fans, history fans, and everyone who cares about the roles women play in such a vital art form. The narrator also did an excellent job!

Vintage Radio Show
Revisado: 02-18-21
I really enjoy vintage radio shows, from the days when people listened to the radio versus watching TV. This short drama is a vintage radio show. If you like vintage radio, or if you want to experience something from the past, you'd probably enjoy this too.

Historia
Author, poet, screenwriter, and outstanding member of the legendary Algonquin Round Table, Dorothy Parker was known for her quick wit, keen observations, and remarkable insight into the human condition. Regarded as brilliant, but known to be an alcoholic and often depressed, Parker’s work pushes all buttons at once: humor, anger, love, pity, and everything in between...she pulled no punches, writing with pure, unadulterated passion; her work is timeless and as pertinent to today’s society as it was to that of the time she wrote.

Great Stories and Great Narrators!
Revisado: 04-19-19
I really enjoyed this book. The short stories and reviews were smart and humorous. I thought all the narrator's did a great job but particularly loved Shirley Booth's acting on the last few stories. I recommend anyone that enjoys intelligent humor and great narration to check this out.

As an unnamed but unforgettable woman muses on her life—from meet cute to marriage and parenthood—her recollections inexorably build to a devastating truth. In this shattering performance, Carey Mulligan, star of the critically lauded drama An Education, captivates audiences with playwright Dennis Kelly’s harrowing ruminations on family, ambition, gender, and violence.

Well Read Monlogue With Surprise Ending
Revisado: 10-16-18
Hooked me as a listener right from the beginning. Definitely conveyed a wide range of emotions. I didn't expect the ending. I would listen to more things by the author or the monologist.
