Until sophomore year of high school, 15-year-old Allison Britz lived a comfortable life in an idyllic town. She was a dedicated student with tons of extracurricular activities, friends, and loving parents at home. But after awakening from a vivid nightmare in which she was diagnosed with brain cancer, she was convinced the dream had been a warning. Allison believed that she must do something to stop the cancer in her dream from becoming a reality.

A great contribution
Revisado: 08-21-23
I have read a lot about OCD and I know people that have it, but I really had no idea of what it could feel like to experience it. The author lets us enter her brain and hear every thought while she was ill, over a period of several months. It was really stressful to listen to the first half of the book, as her OCD experience was stressful and even cruel. Once the diagnosis and healing therapies began, I could barely put it down. The author offers such hope and encouragement through sharing her story. I think this book will help OCD sufferers, mental health practitioners, family members, and anyone who is interested. Well done!

Historia
The last thing Lizzie needs right now is a call from an inmate at Rikers asking for help - even if Zach Grayson is an old friend. But Zach is desperate: His wife, Amanda, has been found dead at the bottom of the stairs in their Brooklyn brownstone. And Zach’s the primary suspect. As Lizzie is drawn into the dark heart of idyllic Park Slope, she learns that Zach and Amanda weren’t what they seemed - and that their friends, a close-knit group of fellow parents at the exclusive Brooklyn Country Day school, might be protecting troubling secrets of their own.

Didn't make it through
Revisado: 07-20-21
The story line was decent enough, but I could not get myself to care about any of the characters. Lots of endlessly gorgeous and shallow people. It seemed an attempt to combine romance novel (which I never read) with murder mystery. It wasn't returnable because it was from the 2-for-1 sale, so I gave up and accepted the loss.

Historia
Twenty-year-old Andrew James Archer seemed to have it all as a midwestern college student at the top of the dean's list and with a beautiful girlfriend at his side. Yet somehow the balance of perfectionist goals and the ability to temporarily turn off anxiety with the help of alcohol and friends allowed Andrew to hide what was lying just beneath the surface: bipolar disorder. In his poignant personal narrative, Andrew invites others inside a hellish prism that left him the victim of substance abuse, depression, suicidal thoughts, mania, and delusions - and in a psychiatric unit....

Thank you!

I work as a para-professional in the mental health system, and this book was enormously helpful. Andrew gives us a look from the inside of a person with bipolar disorder, both when the illness was not managed, and later when he is managing it. My understanding, knowledge and compassion are greatly increased because of his sharing. He brings practical information and hope to all who deal with mental illness. Narration was fast - I had to slow it down to .75 to listen. Loved this book!

Blue Dreams offers the explosive story of the discovery, invention, people, and science behind our licensed narcotics, as told by a riveting writer and psychologist who shares her own intimate experience with the highs and lows of psychiatry's drugs. Lauren Slater's account ranges from the earliest, Thorazine and lithium, up through Prozac and other antidepressants, as well as Ecstasy, "magic mushrooms", the most cutting-edge memory drugs, and even neural implants.

Sobering
Revisado: 06-01-18
Lauren Slater was very thorough in her research of the history of mental health treatments. Her reviews of psychotropic drugs have extra meaning, since she is also a "client" who has experienced many of these drugs herself. I work in the mental health field as a counselor so the science of how each drug works in the brain was immensely helpful. I finished the book with more caution about the use of any drug than I was before (hence my review tile), and more open to hallucinogenics for certain cases. Very interesting read.

Historia
In his first novel to follow the publication of his enormous success, The Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck's vision comes wonderfully to life in this imaginative and unsentimental chronicle of a bus traveling California's back roads, transporting the lost and the lonely, the good and the greedy, the stupid and the scheming, the beautiful and the vicious away from their shattered dreams and, possibly, toward the promise of the future. This edition features an introduction by Gary Scharnhorst.

Delicious!
Revisado: 06-01-18
I loved Steinbeck's depth of characters and how each has something dark or surprising about them. I did a lot of self reflection when I read this book. Steinbeck also has a wicked sense of humor! Loved everything about this read.

Historia
Singular Intimacies is the story of becoming a doctor by immersion at Bellevue Hospital, the oldest public hospital in the country—and perhaps the most legendary. It is both the classic inner-city hospital and a unique amalgam of history, insanity, beauty, and intellect. When Danielle Ofri enters these 250-year-old doors as a tentative medical student, she is immediately plunged into the teeming world of urban medicine: mysterious illnesses, life-and-death decisions, patients speaking any one of a dozen languages, and overworked interns.

A bit too much self absorption
Revisado: 05-01-18
The process of medical training was interesting, as were many of the patient stories, but I tired of the constant stream of insecurities the author shared. The fear of being inexperienced in a high pressure environment was clearly understood and could have used up less space in an otherwise nice read.
