Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Well-written and Depressing
Revisado: 04-24-24
For those of us with, shall we say, sad childhoods, this book may hit a little too close to home. You don't have to experience the exact same situations but emotions are emotions, and this book stirred up feelings I'd rather not revisit. I had to stop often and step away from the book. I remember thinking, will something good ever happen to this poor boy? It was just one sad thing after another.
Oddly enough, overall, I didn't think this book was about the opioid crisis. I mean it was, of course, but that's not the main way I experienced the story. It's about the way so many children in our country are left to get through life all by themselves without any parental guidance or support. So often the system fails them too. It's sad.
That last part of the book was an easier listen.

Historia
Blythe Connor is determined that she will be the warm, comforting mother to her new baby Violet that she herself never had. But in the thick of motherhood's exhausting early days, Blythe becomes convinced that something is wrong with her daughter - she doesn't behave like most children do. Or is it all in Blythe's head? Her husband, Fox, says she's imagining things. The more Fox dismisses her fears, the more Blythe begins to question her own sanity, and the more we begin to question what Blythe is telling us about her life as well.

Compelling
Revisado: 06-06-21
The narrator's voice grabbed me on page one and didn't let go. I didn't know very much about the story going in but it wasn't at all what I expected. Before I knew it, I was all in.
If you're looking for a page turning thriller in the most common way used or you're someone who keeps waiting for something to happen, this might not be for you. At the end of the day it is a character study, a psychological drama that moves forward one disturbing step after another.
The protagonist, Blythe, is so well written--really the entire book is well done. It is a quick read. Recommend!

Disappointing
Revisado: 06-05-21
This is the fifth novel I've read by Kate Morton and all of them were 4 star reads except this one. The writing was lovely as usual, but beyond that the only thing of interest was the relationship between the two girls. It became a struggle to finish.
The narrator was great as always.

Historia
The world has changed around 79-year-old librarian Millicent Carmichael, a.k.a. Missy. Though quick to admit that she often found her roles as a housewife and mother less than satisfying, Missy once led a bustling life driven by two children, an accomplished and celebrated husband, and a Classics degree from Cambridge. Now, her husband is gone, her daughter is estranged after a shattering argument, and her son has moved to his wife's native Australia, taking Missy's beloved only grandchild half-a-world away.

Love!
Revisado: 10-24-20
This story is filled with the rich emotions of life. All of the characters jump off the page and into your heart--the two legged ones as well as the four legged. As we go along with Missy on her journey we feel her sadness and her happiness. We are inspired by her courage. Missy Carmichael will stay with me for a long time.
At some point in life many women will find themselves in the same place as Missy. The kids grow up, the family may live far away or have already passed. Perhaps your husband was the only friend you thought you'd need and suddenly poof you're a widow. Whatever the case, you're alone and just maybe you have to create a new life for yourself. Now you might be thinking this sounds like a depressing book why in the world would I read it? You read it because it's wonderful and authentic. You read it because although there are sad moments you'll find much joy and inspiration on these pages. I enjoyed every minute of it.

Historia
Cassie Hanwell was born for emergencies. As one of the only female firefighters in her Texas firehouse, she's seen her fair share of them, and she's excellent at dealing with other people's tragedies. But when her estranged and ailing mother asks her to uproot her life and move to Boston, it's an emergency of a kind Cassie never anticipated. The tough, old-school Boston firehouse is as different from Cassie's old job as it could possibly be. Hazing, a lack of funding, and poor facilities mean that the firemen aren't exactly thrilled to have a "lady" on the crew.

2.5 Stars
Revisado: 06-20-20
Some parts of the book were enjoyable, but then there were others that came across as very juvenile. For instance, how many paragraphs or pages would you estimate it would take for an adult woman to describe how attractive and wonderful some guy is? Well, I didn't count but I can tell you it was way too many.
I made it all the way through this very light read but I'm not exaggerating when I say some of the scenes were absolutely ridiculous. I would not recommend.

Historia
From the day that old Nana Reja found a baby abandoned under a bridge, the life of a small Mexican town forever changed. Disfigured and covered in a blanket of bees, little Simonopio is for some locals the stuff of superstition, a child kissed by the devil. But he is welcomed by landowners Francisco and Beatriz Morales, who adopt him and care for him. As he grows up, Simonopio becomes a cause for wonder to the Morales family, because when the uncannily gifted child closes his eyes, he can see what no one else can - visions of all that’s yet to come, both beautiful and dangerous.

Sprinkled with Magic
Revisado: 05-08-20
The Murmur of Bees is a special tale that unfolds at a slow pace. The writing is lovely and the story unique. The last forty minutes in particular were so beautifully written.
At some point in the last part of the book my thoughts began to drift and I felt as if the novel could have been whittled down a bit more but it wasn't all that long before it caught my interest again. Other than that it was enchanting.

This book deserves every good review it has received. It is that well done. I was swept up in the story from beginning to end.
What the Wind Knows was the first book I read by this author and I'm hungry for more. The writing is excellent and the characters will stay with me for a very long time.
If you enjoyed the Outlander series chances are you will also love What the Wind Knows. It is such a memorable adventure!

Revisado: 02-22-20
After reading a string of disappointing novels what a pleasure it was to listen to this beautiful piece of literary fiction based on a fascinating time in history I'd never given a thought to before. The plot moves along at a pace that is in harmony with the story being told. I was completely swept up in the lives of these courageous and dedicated horse-riding librarians. I truly savored every moment I spent with them.
What a great reminder of how books change lives!

Not What I Expected
Revisado: 12-23-19
If you loved The Nightingale and/or The Great Alone and expect Night Road to be similar, you'll most likely be disappointed. Perhaps this book would be better suited for young adults because it reads like a teen romance. Although full disclosure, I've never read one.
After listening for approximately three hours there was nothing about the story that engaged me so I decided not to finish. I still look forward to reading another novel by Kristin Hannah. Next time I'll read the reviews more carefully.

Disappointing
Revisado: 09-02-19
Eskens' debut novel, The Life We Bury, is really good. The sequel, The Shadows We Hide, was not as good but still there was enough there to say it was an enjoyable read overall. Unfortunately, The Guise of Another was barely okay enough to keep my interest. It's like it wasn't even written by the same person. The only reason I finished was because it's my understanding the next book in the series is good. Fingers crossed.
