Since birth, you were spoon-fed ideas, beliefs, and routines that program you into the same default path as everyone else. This leads to the same quality of life as everyone else. It’s no wonder why most people feel anxious, overwhelmed, and have a cloud of meaninglessness hovering over their heads at all times. Focus is the cure.

Unbearable Smug Cringe
Revisado: 04-18-25
I really tried to give this book a chance, but the kid (and he IS a kid) who wrote this thing is just unbearably full of himself. We all know the "hustler" types who think they have it all figured out. This guy "sees through the Matrix" and isn't held back by the petty concerns of mere mortals like you and I.
I can't finish it. Every few minutes a cold needle touches a nerve in my molars and I CRINGE like a cat vomiting on a rug.
This kid is not anywhere near as profound as he seems to think he is. I don't care how much money he made on Shopify or whatever.
If you finish the first chapter of this book and come away with anything other than, "this kid's a dink," I worry for you.
It's like if Andrew Tate and the Columbine shooters wrote a book together. All the unbearable cockiness and bravado mixed in with something so painfully fragile it's hard to look at. Irritation and pity at war with boredom and cringe while my eyes roll out the back of my head.
Miss this one.

Not the book this generation needs, but I guess it’s the one they deserve.
Revisado: 01-15-25
Putting this first because it’s the most important — I know many moms who let their kids read Sanderson books sight unseen because they trust the author. I absolutely would not do that with this book. It has much more adult themes than other Sanderson books. I would definitely vet it before you let your teen read it.
Now my review — I was so excited for this book. My husband were making plans to listen to it together for over a year. We pushed play just hours after it dropped.
We never finished it. It just wasn’t fun to read (listen to) at all, and I found some of the content downright offensive. I’m disappointed in the book, but not totally surprised. I was nervous about the way it would go after the strange direction that the fourth book took, but I was hopeful because Sanderson pulled that one out in the end. He might have again, but I may never know. Like I said, I didn’t finish it and I don’t intend to.

We all fail. We all fall. We all need to know how to get back up. Few know this better than New York Times best-selling author Neil Pasricha. Before selling over a million copies of his Book of Awesome series and touring the world to teach Fortune 500 CEOs, Ivy league deans, and members of the royal family how to unlock a positive mind-set, Pasricha’s life hit rock bottom. In this Audible Original, you'll hear for the first time Neil's very personal story of failure and resilience - and you'll learn how you, too, can find the strength to get back up.

Honestly a Little Lame
Revisado: 12-23-24
At first I thought this book was just a little bit on the "soft serve" side of things. I know a lot of people like that sort of thing, so when the author was going on about being "vulnerable" and telling embarrassing personal stories, I let it slide. I figured that sort of thing probably works for some people.
Then when I got to the chapter where the author talks about blocking out massive chunks of his calendar so that he can smoke weed without people bothering him, the whole book suddenly transformed before my eyes into a lame book by a self-important loser who has gotten lucky a time or two.
How many of us have that one friend whose "mind has been like, totally opened" by weed? I'm sorry, but advocating for regular Marijuana and drinking binges in the name of resilience and productivity is just asinine.
I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1 because... well, he just seems like the kind of guy you'd feel bad about being mean to. Maybe that's his real superpower - weaponized vulnerability.

Historia
Over just the last few decades, laws in this nation have exploded in number; they are increasingly complex; and the punishments they carry are increasingly severe. Some of these laws come from our elected representatives, but many now come from agency officials largely insulated from democratic accountability. In Over Ruled, Neil Gorsuch and Janie Nitze explore these developments and the human toll so much law can carry for ordinary Americans.

An Excellent Book About a Serious Problem
Revisado: 08-20-24
There is just too much law. Justice Gorsuch does a great job going into detail about how the code books in the US have steadily expanded until they are essentially unknowable and arbitrary. The fact that we do not currently know how many federal crimes there are is absolutely insane and should be alarming to all of us!
I highly recommend this book.

Historia
In 1541, the brutal conquistador Gonzalo Pizarro and his well-born lieutenant Francisco Orellana set off from Quito in search of La Canela, South America's rumored Land of Cinnamon, and the fabled El Dorado, "the golden man". Driving an enormous retinue of mercenaries, enslaved natives, horses, hunting dogs, and other animals across the Andes, they watched their proud expedition begin to disintegrate even before they descended into the nightmarish jungle, following the course of a powerful river.

Holy Smoke, This Was a Good Book!
Revisado: 08-20-24
I was on the edge of my seat the entire time I was reading this book. The things these men went through (and the cruel things they did to the natives) are almost beyond belief. It's like a story of another planet. It's amazing to me how they were able to survive at all. This story has it all - action, adventure, great heroes and nasty villains, and all of it (supposedly) true. It also tells a great story about the folly of man's hubris when he doesn't respect nature.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to go on a heart pounding, swashbuckling adventure!

Well, This is a Transparent Grift
Revisado: 08-18-24
It started off fine with the throat clearing you'd expect about who and why and then what, and then about dreams coming true and so forth. Really bland and inoffensive stuff.
Then, not surprisingly at all, the author launched into a bunch of gross race stuff. I know it's par for the course these days, but I honestly find it so tedious and exhausting that every single book is just filled with this idiotic poison these days.
The author is very clear that white men need not apply when making a podcast unless they bring in "diverse" viewpoints (herself, perhaps?). This is such an obvious and transparent gift. I get that it has seemingly served this particular author very well so far - the race card seems to have opened doors for her.
Anyone who still believes in 2024 that a person's skin color either precludes or creates by default some set or other of desirable values needs to get their head checked. Asian ladies are the largest demographic on PLANET EARTH. I don't know why this lady seems to feel like her particular viewpoint is somehow underrepresented. The only thing I can surmise is that she is playing pretend just like so many others in order to profit exorbitantly inside a system that was already rigged in her favor. Because anyone who has seen any television, movie, podcast, blog, or newscast has seen that her claim about white men being overrepresented is entirely and utterly false.
Gross and sad. I don't recommend this to anyone with a brain in their heads. Apparently the way to launch a successful podcast is to cry foul until someone hands it to you (unless you are a white male, of course - check your privilege!).

Terrible English - Entirely Unreadable
Revisado: 08-12-24
The most charitable thing I can think of for this book is that it must have been written in a different language originally and then translated (poorly) into English.
That would be tolerable if the content were excellent, but it frankly isn't. I don't like leaving poor reviews, but I very much wish I could get my money back on this one.
I do not recommend this book.

For millennia, humans have used one simple method to solve problems. Whether it's planting crops, building skyscrapers, developing photographs, or designing the first microchip, all creators follow the same steps to engineer progress. But this powerful method, the "engineering method", is an all but hidden process that few of us have heard of—let alone understand—but that influences every aspect of our lives.

Could Have Been a Good Book - If the Author Weren't a Hack Coward
Revisado: 06-01-24
For goodness sake. Can we write nothing, say nothing, MAKE nothing anymore without authors desperately trying to tell everyone that they are on the "right side of history?" Give it a rest. There was so much to say in this book. It could have been a unifying celebration of human ingenuity in all its forms and from a wide variety of practitioners. Instead, every third paragraph the author feels the need to take a jab at people in the past for not thinking like him....... apparently entirely forgetting the THESIS OF HIS OWN BOOK - that people in the past thought differently than us about complex problems to be solved AND that subsequent generations of engineers are standing on the shoulders of those who came before.
To take a time out every couple of paragraphs to take a pot shot at dead men in order to highlight his own virtues (virtues which will also someday be out of fashion - believe that!) is the height of arrogance, folly, and intellectual cowardice.
I liked this book. But I have made it a firm policy of mine to give only one star to any author who proports to write about history and yet takes every opportunity to slam his subjects in order to elevate his own perceived virtues. Shame, shame, shame.

In virtually every way that can be measured, Gen Z’s mental health is worse than that of previous generations. Youth suicide rates are climbing, antidepressant prescriptions for children are common, and the proliferation of mental health diagnoses has not helped the staggering number of kids who are lonely, lost, sad and fearful of growing up. What’s gone wrong with America’s youth? In Bad Therapy, bestselling investigative journalist Abigail Shrier argues that the problem isn’t the kids—it’s the mental health experts.
