Historia
At the turn of the 22nd century, scientists make a breakthrough in human spaceflight. Through a revolutionary method known as somaforming, astronauts can survive in hostile environments off Earth using synthetic biological supplementations. With the fragility of the body no longer a limiting factor, human beings are at last able to journey to neighboring exoplanets long known to harbor life. A team of these explorers, Ariadne O’Neill and her three crewmates, are hard at work in a planetary system 15 light-years from Sol, on a mission to ecologically survey four habitable worlds.

Not enough interpersonal stuff for me
Revisado: 04-13-25
So much of what I like about Becky Chambers’ work is the relationship building. But that seems tertiary to her focus in this one.

Historia
When our story begins, Julia Child is an eager but inexperienced codebreaker longing to prove herself in the male-dominated world of intelligence, and Josephine Baker is, well, Josephine Baker—a world-famous entertainer who is now leading a double life as a spy for the French Resistance. When a golden opportunity arises to infiltrate a high-stakes Nazi gala in Vichy France, Julia must put aside her by-the-book mentality to assist her unorthodox new partner.

Worth the listen
Revisado: 03-21-25
The premise is interesting and most of the acting is good. Julia’s voice is a challenge to listen to for that long especially when she’s making privileged white woman mistakes. But I suppose that’s sort of the point.

It’s officially booty o’clock, I’m alone again in my kitchen choking down a slice of terrible chocolate cake…and I’m pretty sure I just got drunk texted by the man I have a ginormous crush on. I’ve been daydreaming about Eliot Hoffman’s dimples for two months, and even though I’m sure this was a mistake on his end, it doesn’t mean it’s not an opportunity on mine. It’s the middle of the night, and I just wanna talk to him. So I text him back.

Best of the series
Revisado: 03-20-25
I listened to this title first (on a whim) before promptly snatching up the other two. Sweet Talk is my absolute favorite of the series. The nontraditional gender roles and healthy navigation of neurodivergence really make this one stand out for me.

Delicious and full of integri-tea

Themes of service, purpose, connection and integrity abound. And there are still enough moments of joy and mirth to keep the social justice afloat. The narrator is excellent and production quality makes this a comfortable listen.

Truly excellent
Revisado: 03-09-25
Contrary to some of the reviews, I loved the shape of this story beginning to end. The performance is deeply engaging. And the historical world-building was a nice balance of detail without feeling like the author needed to show off all of her research to prove her worth. I’ll be adding both the author and narrator to my follow lists right away.

Too much Bible for me
Revisado: 02-23-25
I quit half way through. Maybe it gets more nuanced before the end. The story doesn’t resonate with my experience of being a daughter of a woman with depression or the way I was treated when dropped into Sunday School from out of town.

Sweet and Witty and just a little scary
Revisado: 02-21-25
I’m among the devout T Kingfisher fans by now, but only just got to listening to this one. I didn’t enjoy the narrator’s accents, but she did read the right emotions into the words, so I was willing to adjust.

Sweetly told story
Revisado: 02-10-25
I loved the way the author addressed persistently problematic modern social issues through a tale of friendship and adventure. The main character has a beautiful arc of growth throughout. The narrator does excellent work bringing each character to life with unique voice. I’ll be adding this to my comfort listening list.

Lighter weight than some of her other books but with the same solid character development

This is a fun small town modern fantasy. If you like the Mystic Bayou series by Molly Harper, you’ll probably enjoy this. There are a few words strangely enough to merit comment, but otherwise it’s well read.
