Known Space meets Bladerunner
Revisado: 02-16-23
Though it is the second entry in the Fleet of Worlds Series, Juggler of Worlds is half prequel half sequel to the first entry. I'm not sure why people have been responding negatively to this title. Thus far, this is my favorite Known Space title. Perhaps more so than Ringworld Engineers. Perhaps readers did not expect this to be a cyberpunk detective story, but I find the intrigue and politics of this story simply irresistible. It adds so much depth the Known Space cannon, and the build up to the events of the Ringworld Series. I don't know why people don't like the narrator, I think he is fantastic. Give it a chance.

Historia
Fleet of Worlds takes a closer look at Human-Puppeteer (Citizen) relations and the events leading up to Niven's first Ringworld novel. Kirsten Quinn-Kovacks is among the best and brightest of her people. She gratefully serves the gentle race that rescued her ancestors from a dying starship, gave them a world, and nurtures them still. If only the Citizens knew where Kirsten's people came from.

Exhilarating
Revisado: 01-17-23
Discover the secrets of the Fleet of Worlds, and take an intimate look at the lives of the Citizens (Puppeteers) and the estranged human colonists, unknown to the rest of known Space, that call the agricultural worlds of the fleet their home. Witness political intrigue, subterfuge, and romance. Learn about the past of Nessus, before meeting Luis Wu. It's a rather different experience from the Ringworld Series, but I enjoyed it thoroughly. If you are interested in expanding your knowledge of Known Space Lore, I recommend it highly. The narrator has a pleasant voice and is very versatile. He did a great job.

different but good
Revisado: 11-04-22
I saw a lot of negative reviews but despite this I have been pleasantly surprised.
I would say if you have genuinely enjoyed the previous books, it's worth reading. I would recommend reading it if you have not read the second book, naturally, you will find yourself lost. Also if you haven't realized up to this point, this series is definitely more science fantasy. The series isn't for hard sci-fi fans that need that need things to be believable- Ringworld has always been pulpy, horny space adventure.
I will point out at this point the narrative structure of the book diverges from the previous two. There are parts narrated by Louie Wu and part narratived by ringworld natives.
I will say sometimes things happen fast and get a little confusing, but if you don't worry yourself too much about always understanding 100% of whats going on or remembering all the names it's fine, as events are often reiterated upon from different perspectives and there's no need to sweat the little details.
Some might be skeptical of the vampire thing but, you just gotta trust me it's not what you are thinking and they fit in with the setting. They did appear briefly in book two after all.
There's also some new characters I find very interesting.

Better than the first one
Revisado: 09-14-22
This might not be the most popular opinion, but this is such a fun and exciting story that it actually makes the first book (which I did enjoy) look mediocre in comparison. The first book will lead you to believe that the ringworld is an empty and desolate place, but here it is revealed that is everything but. It is a vast and marvelous world full of strange wonders and fascinating inhabitants. A word of warning, however, if you found the risque nature of the first title off-putting...well...let's just say sex actually plays an strange but interesting role in the culture of the Ringworld's inhabitants...and there is a decent amount of it. So if that's not really your thing, it might not be for you. Personally I didn't mind it at all though. I think it's done tastefully.

Historia
Strange things exist on the periphery of our existence, haunting us from the darkness looming beyond our firelight. Black magic, weird cults, and worse things loom in the shadows. The Children of Old Leech have been with us from time immemorial. And they love us.... Donald Miller, geologist and academic, has walked along the edge of a chasm for most of his nearly 80 years, leading a charmed life between endearing absent-mindedness and sanity-shattering realization. Now, all things must converge.

recommended for fans
Revisado: 07-20-22
To preface this review, I recommend reading or listening to "Occultation and Other Stories'", an anthology of Laird Barron's short stories which take place in the same universe and provides some additional context to the overarching mythology of his work. Or at the very least read his short stories "Mysterium Tremendum" and "The Broadsword".
Without spoiling anything, "The Croning" incorporates a popular folk tale into it's narrative, putting his own spin on it in a way which eventually ties directly into the story.
It is not a strictly chronological story, but rather alternates between past and present, the events of the past gradually unvealing a conspiracy that has been carefully hidden by unseen forces.
Honestly, there are some parts of the story that could have been ommitted in favor tying up loose ends that are not addressed. I understand that by nature, the mystery is not meant to be fully understood and I respect that.. however I feel in many ways this story builds up to a certain confrontation that never happens. The ending is fitting, if not underdeveloped. The character development focuses too much on the protagonist and not quite enough on those close to him.
If you are looking for something fast paced, this isn't it.
That said, while there are some flaws, I still enjoyed the story. If you are familiar and have enjoyed Barron's work it's surely worth a read.

good collection
Revisado: 07-12-22
A dark and moody collection of stories. If you are a fan of cosmic horror or creepy short stories, this will make good addition to your collection. Overall, I think it was quite good. Of course, I liked some stories better than others. Naturally, this type of writing isn't for everyone. But if you sought this out, you probably already have a general idea of what your getting into. There are no happy endings here, only terrible fate.
This particular brand of horror is what I would prefer to as "slow burn". You can expect two thirds of a story to be dedicated to building suspense and setting the mood. When a story reaches its climax...you may have questions. Those questions probably won't be answered. That's a feature, not a bug. If you don't like that aspect, perhaps this isn't for you
I was pleasantly surprised to see that this anthology also features two stories featuring gay main characters. They aren't pleasant stories, but I would not consider any story in this collection pleasant. That's the point after all.
Content Warning:
The third story, The Laggerstatte, contains a sexual assault scene. If this is a subject that causes you distress, I advise skipping it .

Eye Opening
Revisado: 06-27-22
An eye opening experience of a series that expanded my horizons. It challenges anthropomorphic lenses through which we consider the possibilities of intelligent life, and provides appreciation for beauty and complexity of the invertebrate life we share a planet with today, which we fail to appreciate on account of our vast evolutionary differences. It begs the question... supposing our ancestors never came to occupy the niche we do today, for whatever reason, would another one of neighbors take our place? And if they did, how differently would they approach the challenges that we have faced?
