Historia
Throughout these books, Follett has followed the fortunes of five intertwined families - American, German, Russian, English, and Welsh - as they make their way through the twentieth century. Now they come to one of the most tumultuous eras of all: the enormous social, political, and economic turmoil of the 1960s through the 1980s, from civil rights, assassinations, mass political movements and Vietnam to the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis, presidential impeachment, revolution - and rock and roll.

Whar a Century!
Revisado: 02-21-25
We experience complex and dramatic history through the lives of Follet’s characters. Over decades we laugh and cry with some and despise others. Follett’s grasp
of historical details is remarkable and he is a master of plot embedded in those details. I didn’t want the trilogy to end and dreaded getting to the last page.

Historia
On May 1, 1915, with WWI entering its tenth month, a luxury ocean liner as richly appointed as an English country house sailed out of New York, bound for Liverpool, carrying a record number of children and infants. The passengers were surprisingly at ease, even though Germany had declared the seas around Britain to be a war zone. For months, German U-boats had brought terror to the North Atlantic.

A Riveting History Lesson
Revisado: 04-17-24
Larsen writes about the tragic sinking of the Lusitania with as much attention as is generally given to the sinking of the Titanic. He brings the passengers to life through their unique stories and presents a nuanced picture of Captain Turner and to a lesser extent the German UBoat enemy
captain. The backdrop is World War I and the politics of war and peace in England, Germany and the US. This is history and storytelling at their best, enhanced by the superb voice of the audiobook performer.

Historia
Ninety-one-year-old Gretel Fernsby has lived in the same well-to-do mansion block in London for decades. She lives a quiet, comfortable life, despite her deeply disturbing, dark past. She doesn’t talk about her escape from Nazi Germany at age 12. She doesn’t talk about the grim post-war years in France with her mother. Most of all, she doesn’t talk about her father, who was the commandant of one of the Reich’s most notorious extermination camps. All The Broken Places moves between Gretel’s girlhood in Germany to present-day London as a woman haunted by the past.

Guilt and its consequences
Revisado: 03-30-24
The development of the central character, Gretl is superbly done. The author succeeds in bringing to life a woman who is complex and three dimensional—and awfully clever at repartee! His supporting cast is essential to the plot line contending with guilt as well as grief, fear, cruelty, rage, revenge. The book is written with vivid scenes and dialogue you can almost hear.
Well you can hear it on Audible where the reader/actors are wonderful. They infuse the written word with life, and I felt like I was listening to a radio play. A satisfying read/listen with an unexpected and satisfying end.

Historia
An elegantly crafted, utterly enchanting debut novel set in a mystical, exotic world, in which a gifted young girl charms a sultan and changes the course of an empire's history. The Oracle of Stamboul is a marvelously evocative, magical historical novel that will transport readers to another time and place—romantic, exotic, yet remarkably similar to our own.

A Haunting Story
Revisado: 01-11-24
The story of Eleanora Cohen unfolds as if one has come upon a ball of silvery yarn and lets it unfurl, following it as one is led through a precocious child’s mind and the paths of a magnificent exotic city. Mysterious birds appear and vanish leaving the reader/listener with more questions than answers. The author’s writing flows as beautifully as the Bosphorus.

An interesting read
Revisado: 01-10-23
Briefly: this is a fun read, or should I say a fun listen! Author Balson reveals an aspect of WW2 I hadn't known regarding details of Germany's attempt to create an atomic bomb. His characters are likeable and are often in danger. The suspense moves the story along. The dialogue is realistic with a touch of humor at times despite the challenging circumstances. The only negative is that narrator Berman is not so good at differentiating the characters with his voice and attempt at German accents. He does best with nuclear scientist Alison Fisher. Nonetheless, An Affair of Spies is satisfying and on the whole well done.
