Historia
In late 2022, in Rome, Hanif Kureishi had a fall. When he came to, he realized he could no longer walk. He could do nothing without the help of others and required constant care in a hospital. So began a yearlong odyssey through the medical systems of Rome and Italy, with the hope of somehow being able to return home to his house in London.

Excellent Narrator for the material
Revisado: 02-20-25
I think the narrator elevated the book. This is not a joyful book. In a fashion this are collected essays. But for what it is, it is a worthy read

Historia
Al Franken, Giant of the Senate is a book about an unlikely campaign that had an even more improbable ending: the closest outcome in history and an unprecedented eight-month recount saga, which is pretty funny in retrospect. It's a book about what happens when the nation's foremost progressive satirist gets a chance to serve in the United States Senate and, defying the low expectations of the pundit class, actually turns out to be good at it.

Entertaining, Informative.
Revisado: 08-06-18
Of course one wishes that Al Franken was still in senate and was not caught up in the scandals he was. One can still hope that he gets his due ethics investigation and runs again - but none of that takes away anything from this memoir which is equal parts entertaining and informative! It covers almost all aspects of his job from beginning and its a great pleasure listening to all his anecdotes in Franken's own voice.

Historia
There is a saying that when lovers fall out, a plane goes down. A Case of Exploding Mangoes is the story of one such plane. Why did a Hercules C130, the world's sturdiest aircraft, carrying Pakistan's military dictator General Zia ul Haq, go down on 17 August, 1988?
Was it because of: mechanical failure; human error; the CIA's impatience; a blind woman's curse; generals not happy with their pension plans; the mango season? Or could it be your narrator, Ali Shigri?

I was a kid growing up in India when Pakistan's president Zia Ul Haq was killed in an airplane crash, and the event was a huge news item of the time. I still have the echoes of that news somewhere in my back pocket. Finding this book was brilliant on that front but I noted that even if I was not aware of the whole incident I'd had enjoyed the book equally because the book is written with excellent pace and great character development.
The narration gives soul to the book and makes is unputdownable. An excellent little piece of work.
