Some people might say that this is a Harry Potter knock-off or complain that it's not as good as Harry Potter. BUT it's still fun in its own right. Audible, I'm ready for the next one (pretty please)!

Granted I'm not the YA audience this is targeted to, but I find myself rolling my eyes a lot at the overthinking girl talk involved in building these characters. I continue to listen to this series in order to find the answers to the questions posed in books 1 and 2, but I'm not sure for how much longer.

BUT the narrator continues to do a good job with the separate accents of each character. The material is no reflection on her.

No, you don't have to agree with his politics to appreciate this book, in case you were wondering, as I was. This is just a good story in and of itself with a dynamic and funny narrator telling his own story.

This parenting book is the first one that has really rung true for me. It just SOUNDS right. I like her general philosophy AND she gives you actual words to say and what to do with your hands. Because as a first time parent running on fumes, sometimes you need that. Sometimes you just can't put a philosophy into practice without that concrete starting place. Once you get the hang of it, obviously you branch out on your own. But getting started, it's VERY helpful. Janet also reads her own work well. And there's a blog and a Facebook page to follow for continued guidance. All great resources.

YES! As a mom of two whose youngest started daycare almost a year ago, this is STILL relevant to me. I listened to it in part to remind myself of some of the ridiculousness of this time of life - in order avoid frustration - and in part for any advice I may have missed. It's a good read. Some of it is a little slanted toward the decisions she made (ahem, nanny), but you would expect an advice book to be that way. Living in a more rural area, some of the more New York-y things didn't really apply, but the basic grains of truth and situation are there. Marriage struggles. Pumping. Being away from your baby. Trying to focus. Sleep. All relevant. All good stuff. Narrator Allyson Ryan is a dynamic reader that gets good laughs.

Student loans: yep. Getting started in a profession: yep. Frustrating systemic hurdles: yep. Social media: yep. All covered in this interesting investigation, but it still seems a little limited. The author only mentions parenthood in passing but doesn't really explore it. She covers the difficulties of getting started in a career pretty thoroughly, but many many millenials are becoming parents for the first time in a world of parenting where expectations are higher than ever and resources are lower than ever. I would have liked to have heard a bit more about that. Perhaps this is because I just finished reading The Fifth Trimester by Lauren Smith Brody. Now THAT would be a co-authorship I would LOVE to read.

1984 Audiolibro Por George Orwell arte de portada

Exactly the performance this story requires

What made the experience of listening to 1984 the most enjoyable?

The performance of the narrator is exactly what this story needs. He reflects the tone of the book perfectly and gives it a sometimes alarmingly air of truth. He really transports you to this time of fear and oppression.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

The story itself is not particularly enjoyable. Enlightening perhaps. Cautionary certainly. But depressing and sometimes horrible. The ending does not in any way redeem the book as some other dystopian novels do. Ayn Rand's Anthem has a positive ending despite such a negative society. This book has no such redemption.

No Bad Kids Audiolibro Por Janet Lansbury arte de portada

Would you listen to No Bad Kids again? Why?

I would listen to this book daily if I had the time, and at only three hours long, I almost do. Janet Lansbury does a fantastic job of making her concepts clear (for us sleep-deprived-brain-addled parents), reframing the way to look at toddler behavior, and giving you ACTUAL WORDS to say, not just theories. They are easy to implement, developmentally appropriate, and respectful of the child. And not in a wishy-washy let the kid win kind of way. Toddlers need discipline. Parents need help in establishing it. This book helps. Even if you don't subscribe wholeheartedly, this is a good feather to put in your parenting cap.

New perspective to existing conversation

Any additional comments?

This book is a good addition to an existing conversation about the two justices Sandra Day O'Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsberg. It brings a new analysis to the backgrounds and effect on women of each. However, if you are new to the conversation yourself - as I was - you may want to start elsewhere. The organization is jumpy and the references often incomplete, as if you are supposed to have the necessary background information already.

Sentence structure is sometimes difficult to follow, but I am unsure if that is due to the writing or the narration.

It was an interesting read but not as much of a joy as it could have been.
