Historia
It is 1950. London is still reeling from World War II, and Margery Benson, a schoolteacher and spinster, is trying to get through life, surviving on scraps. One day, she reaches her breaking point, abandoning her job and small existence to set out on an expedition to the other side of the world in search of her childhood obsession: an insect that may or may not exist - the golden beetle of New Caledonia. When she advertises for an assistant to accompany her, the woman she ends up with is the last person she had in mind.

Historia
Two retired Texas Rangers, Captains Woodrow Call and Augustus "Gus" McCrae, lead a cattle drive from the small town of Lonesome Dove to the unsettled Montana territories. On their grueling journey, they are joined by Joshua Deets, a Black scout and former Ranger, Jake Spoon, a fugitive, and Newt Dobbs, a 17-year-old boy who may have family ties to Call. Richly authentic, beautifully written, always dramatic, Lonesome Dove will make listeners laugh and weep, dream and remember.

Throwback to the days of settlers
Revisado: 04-13-24
I liked the story so much. It’s got me wanting to trace the path of the cowboys. The narrator did a wonderful job of changing voices so I could tell who was speaking at any time. Gus was my favorite character.

Available for the first time as an audiobook in this original Outlander novella, Diana Gabaldon reveals what really happened to Roger MacKenzie Wakefield’s parents. Orphaned during World War II, Roger believed that his mother died during the London Blitz, and that his father, an RAF pilot, was killed in combat. But in An Echo in the Bone, Roger discovers that this may not be the whole story. Now, in "A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows," readers finally learn the truth.

Short and sweet. I love how this book fills in a few blanks about Rogers’s mom and dad. Every time I read a book from Diana Gabaldon I ache for more.

This story is an easy listen and harkens back to recent times on a farm. The setting is interesting without being action-packed - much like real life. I enjoyed the narrator’s reading.

Historia
Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

This story is not a boring scientific summary of DNA findings, but takes into consideration how we, as Homo Sapiens, currently interact with our surroundings. I found it very interesting.

Historia
In what is widely hailed as the best of his many novels, Charles Bukowski details the long, lonely years of his own hardscrabble youth in the raw voice of alter ego Henry Chinaski. From a harrowingly cheerless childhood in Germany through acne-riddled high school years, and his adolescent discoveries of alcohol, women, and the Los Angeles Public Library's collection of D. H. Lawrence, Ham on Rye offers a crude, brutal, and savagely funny portrait of an outcast's coming-of-age during the desperate days of the Great Depression.

Strangely Honest, Yet Crass and Depraved.
Revisado: 10-27-22
This story is strangely intriguing in its crass and depraved language. The cadence of the story-teller really helps move the story along and I imagine his voice is exactly what Bukowski sounds like. Some people may be offended about the content of “boy talk” of masturbation, drinking and fighting, but I find it’s refreshingly honest. Like thoughts without a filter.

Inspiring
Revisado: 07-13-22
A friend shared this book with me after finding out about my newly found passion for basket weaving. What she shared was a hard copy, but I found myself unable to sit down for long to turn the pages. I was so touched by reading the introduction that I had to hear more. A mantra that’s in this book is one that I mean to live by, but often get lured away from: only take what you can use. There are so many stories not only about basket weaving, but about life as it was meant to live - in symbiosis with the Earth. The author’s recounting of her experiences are touching, helpful and inspiring. I want to know more.

Love the follow up
Revisado: 05-18-22
At this stage in the story, the fourth book, I find myself forgetting the details from earlier books. It is SO wonderful that the author seems to know exactly where I’ve forgotten details and just when I’m tempted to go back a read for context, has the characters summarize the previous events! Davina Porter is one of the BEST narrators. I can tell who is speaking by the way she uses higher and lower tones and various accents for each character. I really enjoy the story and also the performance.
