Revisado: 08-18-20
A whirlwind adventure tale about love, loss, anger and magic. I loved every moment of this unexpected, beautiful story Rosanne weaved for us.
Karina is already soaring to the top of my favorite characters list. I love her anger, I love her moral compass and I absolutely admire her strength. I truly cannot wait to see where the next book takes her. I can't wait to see her take back her kingdom. A true queen.

An exemplary feat in writing...
Revisado: 08-18-20
Alexander Freed raised the bar and broke all my expectations with logical, beautiful growth that was necessary, empowering and heartbreaking. There were moments in this book that were exhilarating and SO wild. Alphabet Squadron and Shadow Fall continue to be the only books that I've begun again immediately after finishing, it's that good.
Alphabet Squadron continues to give me what other Star Wars stories do not: diversity, queer representation and raw, powerful emotion. This sequel was extraordinary in the ways that it forced these beautiful characters to explore grief, trauma and guilt - and what it means to confront the worst parts of yourself, and how you move forward. There is so much growth in these pilots over the course of this novel, moments that made me proud of them, and other moments that made me feel sadness, anguish and disappointment. There's also something to be said about the subtle ways of showing growth and care between all of these characters, from the way Yrica relishes in Chass' arm around her, to the brotherhood blooming between Wyl and Nath, down to the way Chass seeks unspoken comfort in Yrica - none of these gestures are grand or showy. Their bonds with each other are extremely delicate, and their moments are fleeting, but their connections with one another are strong, which makes the later betryals all the more painful. The way these characters come off the page and exude such a realness will never not completely amaze me. I can predict nothing of them or their actions - and I love and admire that way of writing, so much.
I am continuously awed by the way Alexander writes the conflict and reasoning behind both sides of the Rebellion and the Empire. It's never so easy to write one or the other off as a complete villain, and it's endlessly fascinating. Furthermore, I am also continuously awed by how Alexander Freed writes battle sequences, so tactical in description and yet, so easy to understand. There is one scene in particular where Wyl Lark, my favorite pansexual baby angel, pulls off an incredible flight move that made me ready to dethrone Poe Dameron as BEST DAMN PILOT IN THE GALAXY.
There is absolutely nothing about this series that is predictable, not at all in ways other Star Wars stories maybe can be. This story is packed with thrills, heartache, pain, surprises and so much more. Alphabet Squadron continues to be my all time favorite Star Wars and I'm going to be on edge while we wait for the final installment. I can't wait to have Yrica, Chass, Wyl, Nath and Kiros back in my life, once again.

I must announce that Jude Duarte and Cardan Greenbriar will forever own my entire life. I am deeply, deeply satisfied with this entire series and this conclusion.
I want to forever thank Holly Black. She ignited my love for faerie as a lost teen with Tithe. Now as an adult, I’m in love with it all over again thanks to The Folk of The Air.
I found strength in the resilient vulnerability of Kaye Fierch, and now I do through the fierce heart of Jude Duarte. Through them, Holly has made me feel powerful.
Just, wow.

A true treasure....
Revisado: 01-10-20
I can't get enough of the intoxicating worlds that Simone St. James creates.
This book is so extraordinarily atmospheric. There are so few books that can truly make me feel like I am in a living, breathing world, and this one definitely made me feel like I was truly there, experiencing it all alongside Ellie. The ghosts in this one were petrifying, the romance was delicious and the mystery was so fascinating. Simone St. James manages to always surprise me with her careful, beautiful words about love and ghosts. The perfect marriage of the paranormal and the romance in Simone's writing will have you quite literally daydreaming and wishing that you were also a spellbinding heroine, solving a murder case, plagued by ghosts and beginning a romantic entanglement with a dreamy Englishman. Thanks for giving me this hopeless dream, Simone.
Ellie Winter is one of my new favorite protagonists of all time. I loved being inside of her head, and there were times where I felt myself comforted by her words and her thoughts.
I can't wait to devour the rest of her novels. I am hooked for life.

Misfit pilots and complex adventures...
Revisado: 01-10-20
This is my new favorite Star Wars.
This story, the representation, the pure emotion of it all -- just, wow. It has been months since I finished this book, and I've already re-read it twice. There's something so special about these rebellious misfits and their massive differences that make them so perfect when they work together. The fact that they're all so broken and are constantly striving to just do the right thing, despite their circumstances, is what is so fascinating about this story.
So thrilled that this is a trilogy. I can't wait for more action, more badassery, and of course, more pain

A dizzying and beautiful tale of magic & violence
Revisado: 05-31-19
I was first introduced to Holly Black's deliciously dark world of fae many years ago through her novel Tithe. A story about a faerie who grows up in the mortal world, not knowing what she truly is. It swept me away and took me from my dreaded high school halls into a world where impossible things existed. I fell in love with the story, with Kaye and Roiben and the world of fae. Tithe ignited my imagination, and now, many years later, The Cruel Prince is doing the same thing. I am being swept away into this gorgeous and horrifying world of fae, and turns out, I'm still in love with it.
The Cruel Prince sets up the world I fell in love with as a teen, but this time around, it feels more like a living, breathing thing. Jude Duarte is a protagonist I've never read before. I love her ambition, which can be ugly and unfair just as much as it is earned and rightful. I love her violence, which is just and at times, shocking. I love her conflict, which is true and immediate. I love everything about her, and she is my new favorite character.
The bond between Cardan and Jude is also unlike anything I've ever read before. It is complex and awful, but also enchanting and almost beautiful. I can't wait to see how the rest of their story will unfold.
I'm hooked. Thanks, Holly Black.

my all-time favorite Star Wars book..
Revisado: 05-31-19
After reading Queen’s Shadow, I immediately threw myself into Leia, Princess of Alderaan by Claudia Gray. And, in true Star Wars fashion, this book and Queen’s Shadow are like poetry; they rhyme. (And oh my god, my heart!!!)
This book held tight into my emotions and never let me go. Leia Organa is my all time favorite Star Wars character. Growing up, and even more-so now as an adult, I’ve looked up to Leia for her headstrong bravery. But now, I admire her more for her kindhearted resilience. This book gave me so much of Leia that I didn’t even know I needed until I read it. Against all odds, Leia does what is right and doesn’t back down until something good is accomplished. Even when she’s ultimately at her lowest, or when she is uncertain of her place in the Galaxy, Leia leads with her mind and her heart. She puts her duty to her family, her planet and her conscience first, and it’s something I greatly admire.
Not only did this book make me feel closer to my favorite character, but it made me understand the Rebellion so much more than I ever did before through Bail and Breha Organa. Claudia Gray gave both of these characters the voices they’ve always needed. Breha, the good-natured, regal woman with a brilliant mind and Bail, the pillar of strength and love. Together, Bail and Breha represent what I believe to be the first loving, organic and realistic portrait of parenthood in the SW universe. After reading and reflecting on this beautiful novel, Bail and Breha have skyrocketed to the top of my favorite characters list.
If you’re a Leia fan of any kind, this book is a must read. It’s a poignant look at Leia’s life just as it’s really beginning and the weight of all the losses she will endure in order to become the woman and leader we know her to be. There are so many surprises and gripping storylines, and I’m still reeling from *all* of them.

we are brave, your highness.
Revisado: 05-31-19
When I was a little girl, I remember walking into my 4th grade classroom in a Queen Padmé Amidala shirt, knowing my mom would be pulling my brothers and I out of school early because it was opening day of Episode I: The Phantom Menace. I hadn’t even seen the film yet but I knew this young Queen was going to be my hero, alongside Princess Leia. And of course, she was. Even as time went on and the films after Episode I did a disservice to her, and when she was ultimately forgotten from popular SW media, Padmé remained in my heart. And now, thanks to E.K. Johnston, Padmé and her handmaidens finally have their own story.
This book is a gift. I’ve always wanted to get inside Padmé’s head and know exactly how her mind worked. I desperately wanted to know what her world was like and how deep the connection was between her and her handmaiden’s. This story gave me all of that, and more. It takes place after Episode I and just before Episode II, which means this is a Star Wars tale where Padmé finally gets to be the star of her own story. And thank god for that. The strongest storyline in this novel explores Padmé’s deep bond with her best friend and number one handmaiden, Sabé. We finally get to know what these women are like, what their interests are, where their hearts lie, and just how far they would go to protect one another.
It’s not as action packed as other Star Wars novels are. Instead we are met with a heartfelt story about powerful female friendships, loyalty and devotion, the truth about Padmé’s elaborate gowns and make-up, secret missions, and Padmé’s transition from Queen to Senator. It’s about being in the head of a woman who fights for what is right within the Galaxy and her homeland, no matter who mocks her or underestimates her.
I loved every word of this book, and I already know I’ll be revisiting it again in the future. I can’t thank E.K. Johnston enough for giving us this story. I can only hope she continues Sabé’s story, too. Now I’ll never stop wishing I could actually go to Naboo.

So tremendously in love with this exquisite story and the treachery of it all. There has not been a book that has wound its way around my entire existence in *so* long. I'm enriched by the world-building, every single storyline twist and the power of Jude Duarte's resilience.
The depth of Cardan and Jude's bond just lures me deeper and deeper into pure obsession. I'm utterly addicted to the wicked beauty of their unlikely entanglement.
Those last chapters made me burst inside with adoration and complete shock. Cardan, I love you, but also, HOW DARE YOU?

Revisado: 05-31-19
“Fairy tales are full of girls who wait, who endure, who suffer. Good girls. Obedient girls. Girls who crush nettles until their hands bleed. Girls who haul water for witches. Girls who wander through deserts or sleep in ashes or make homes for transformed brothers in the woods. Girls without hands, without eyes, without the power of speech, without any power at all. But then a prince rides up and sees the girl and finds her beautiful. Beautiful, not despite her suffering, but because of it.”
I don't know how Holly Black does it, but I am eternally grateful that she does.
The perfect novella into the mysterious and often frustrating mind of Jude's twin sister, Taryn. Half apology, half explanation, all because of miscommunication. I loved this window into a different side of the story, one that I had been curious and angry about. Taryn is a tragic character, just like Jude. (But, I'm still on Jude's side, through and through.)
Bravo, Holly
