Historia
Most of us have a limited understanding of the powerful role economics has played in shaping human civilization. This makes economic history - the study of how civilizations structured their environments to provide food, shelter, and material goods - a vital lens through which to think about how we arrived at our present, globalized moment. Designed to fill a long-empty gap in how we think about modern history, these 48 lectures are a comprehensive journey through more than 600 years of economic history.

Great Courses...NOT!
- De P. Smith en 01-12-17
Vaguely unsatisfying
Revisado: 12-06-18
Hard to know exactly how to rate these survey courses. How much does economics differ from finance differ from politics differ from social history? Especially at the survey level?
The material before the industrial revolution was good. The most recent stuff was just a rehash.
Nonetheless anyone who is widely read keeps going ”yabbut”. With lots of his examples. And then saying “But could I do better?”
That might be my problem with all survey courses. (Except Art History. That was fun. And Chemistry. They do two years material in one year. That’s no fun.)

Historia
Over 5,000 years, India has been home to a rich tapestry of peoples and cultures. Two of the world's great religions - Hinduism and Buddhism - have their origins in South Asia, and the lands east of the Indus River have long been a central hub for trade, migration, and cultural exchange. Today the subcontinent contains 20 percent of the world's population and is a thriving center for global business, making this region one of most significant economic powerhouses in the world.

Indian History 101
Revisado: 10-28-16
Overview of Indian history from the beginning to 2016. Broad cultural and economic themes emphasized although there is some "X defeated Y at the battle of Z in the year Z" stuff, but since that's not on the test (no test) it's just fine detail.
Speaking of details, one of my tests on these sorts of books, in areas where I'm not expert, is how well the detail matches my memory of news and other books I've read. If there's a discrepancy I research the differences rather than trusting my memory and the propaganda I've prev

Historia
It's been a while since we first met Lee Child's Jack Reacher in Killing Floor. Fifteen years and sixteen novels later, Reacher still lives off the grid, until trouble finds him, and then he does whatever it takes, much to the delight of listeners and the dismay of villains. Now someone big is looking for him. Who? And why? Hunting Jack Reacher is a dangerous business, as FBI Special Agents Kim Otto and Carlos Gaspar are about to find out.

Dumb
Revisado: 07-14-16
I was very disappointed by this book. The general idea was ok, but the plot quickly got away from the author. It is so wrapped up in building conspiracy theories that it ends up making very little sense. The main character is unsympathetic. Then top it off with an extremely poor performance from the reader, who mispronounced many words and the entire experience was a huge disappointment. Too bad. I love the Reacher series so I had high expectations. I'll not be pursuing #2 in the series.

Historia
In remote, icy Greenland, ex-Air Force General Steven Macaulay helps lead an expedition to recover a lost World War II plane. Encased in ice below is a find that will astonish the world - a perfectly-preserved Viking ship, buried for nearly a thousand years, along with the frozen corpses of nine crewmen. Assembling the foremost Viking scholars, Macaulay tasks the gorgeous Lexy Vaughan to translate the ship’s markings - until her work is cut short when her colleagues are murdered.

What a totally stupid premise. Anyone who has the slightest knowledge of Icelandic history and customs will hate this book. So disappointing.
