Historia
A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. A strange collection of very curious photographs. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets 16-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.

Would be 5 stars if it weren't for the narrator
Revisado: 09-12-16
The narrator makes a great Jake, but I really wish they'd gotten someone else to read for the other characters. The narrator's Welsh accents were almost unbearable. But it's still a great story!

Historia
Dr. Jamison is one of the foremost authorities on manic-depressive (bipolar) illness; she has also experienced it firsthand. For even while she was pursuing her career in academic medicine, Jamison found herself succumbing to the same exhilarating highs and catastrophic depressions that afflicted many of her patients, as her disorder launched her into ruinous spending sprees, episodes of violence, and an attempted suicide.

Eye opening and emotional, regardless of whether or not you suffer from a mental illness
Revisado: 02-15-16
It's rare to find a non-fiction book that is so educational and eye-opening, yet reads as effortlessly as a fiction novel. By the time you're done with it, you'll know more about manic depressive disorder/bipolar disorder than you would from any textbook.
The only reason why I didn't rate it 5 stars overall is because this audiobook version is not the same as the current edition on sale now. This may not be an issue for most people (I like to read along with the book) but it's still important to know, especially if you've been assigned to read this book for a class. The audio and written versions aren't TOO different, but the written version does include a really interesting chapter regarding the author's opinion of the term "manic-depressive" being changed to "bipolar".

Historia
In the opening scene of Falling Man, Keith Neudecker emerges from the smoke and ash of the burning tower where he worked, and makes his way to the apartment of his ex-wife and young son uptown. Throughout this bold and haunting novel, DeLillo traces the way the events of September 11 kindled or rekindled relationships, reconfigured our emotional landscape, our memory, and our perception of the world.

Mixed feelings
Revisado: 04-09-15
As my professor who taught this book told our class, "This may not be the book about 9/11 you want, but it is the book you need". DeLillo is definitely an interesting writer and I have to say, after reading several of his books, I'm not really the biggest fan of his style. That being said, this is a very "real" book. It may be fictionalization, but it's certainly not a fairy tale, which is something people "need" in a book about 9/11. In terms of the audiobook, I thought the narrator did a pretty good job considering how hard DeLillo's dialogue can be to follow (and he was MUCH better than the narrator for "Libra").

Historia
Claire Harwell hasn't settled into grief; events haven't let her. Cool, eloquent, raising two fatherless children, Claire has emerged as the most visible of the 9/11 widows who became a potent political force in the aftermath of the catastrophe. She longs for her husband, but she has found her mission: she sits on a jury charged with selecting a fitting memorial for the victims of the attack.

An engaging and thought-provoking surprise!
Revisado: 03-19-15
To be honest, this is probably not a book I would have picked up on my own if I hadn't been asked to read it for a class. But I am so glad I did! It's such a controversial topic that you'd think it would be either a conservative or liberal propaganda book. But it definitely is not; it's a book about what it means to be an American. Normally, you can sense the author's opinion through the text, but Waldman does a fantastic job of telling the story from the characters' perspectives, not hers. Dunne does a great job as a narrator too! She not only gives a lot of emotion to her reading, but also adds personality and a voice to each character (a quality in an audiobook that's not necessary, but I always love). Please don't let the premise of this book turn you off! I promise you won't regret it!

Historia
Libra is a fictional speculation on one of modern history's central events: the assassination of John F. Kennedy. The anti-hero is Lee Harvey Oswald, who is as hauntingly real in the book as he was elusive in reality. Here he is joining the Marines, defecting to Russia, and imagining himself as an agent of history.

Good story. Awful audiobook.
Revisado: 02-20-15
"Libra" is by no means an easy book. It's incredibly dense and confusing and I honestly probably wouldn't have been able to finish it if I hadn't been required to read it (it took almost 3 minutes to finish just one page on 1.5x speed). But it is a good story, especially if you're into Kennedy history.
The audiobook, on the other hand, is almost unbearable. I have nothing against the narrator (though he is a little emotionless and boring); it's the organization. The audiobook claims to have "chapters" but there just randomly thrown in and don't follow the book's chapters at all! I understand that the chapters aren't "numbered" in the book, but that doesn't mean they couldn't try to organize it a little better. This may not be that big of a deal to casual readers, but it is VERY inconvenient when you're trying to follow along in a physical book or trying to find a certain spot in the book. If you're reading this for a class, make sure you buy a hard copy because you will NOT be able to follow along in an audio book!
This is only my second Audible book, and as a student I really hope this is only a singular problem and isn't present in other books.

Historia
The story opens in 1906 in New Rochelle, New York, at the home of an affluent American family. One lazy Sunday afternoon, the famous escape artist Harry Houdini swerves his car into a telephone pole outside their house. And almost magically, the line between fantasy and historical fact, between real and imaginary characters, disappears.

Amazing story!
Revisado: 01-26-15
This was a required reading book for one of my college courses and it was one the first times I'd actually really enjoyed a required book! It's a wonderfully told story that has many adult elements, but the writing style makes it a light and easy read. The only complaint I have is the narrator (who's the author of the book). He does an okay job but I really wish there was more emotion. His voice was so calm and peaceful that I almost wanted to fall asleep!
