Angie Thomas captures the voices of teenagers convincingly thein a surprisingly timeless fashion. Babu Turpin is now my absolute favorite reader. She delivers a nuanced performance that puts you right next to every character in the book. She changes not only her outch, but her cadence and phrasing for each character.

This is a contemporary story but also a timeless one. It immediately transported me back to the days of voluntary integration by busing that took place in the 1980's in metropolitan Boston. Thomas illustrates the tremendous differences in what constitutes a bad day, depending on where you live and your race, without having to state that is what she is doing. She created characters who are full, complicated, and multidimensional. She weaves the plot in ways I didn't predict, but that make sense when you get there. I didn't realize this was young adult fiction until after I had listened to it. Very compelling story. So sorry to leave there characters when it ended.
