Easily one of my favorite memoirs I have ever read, and certainly one of the best I’ve ever listened to. The author’s humor, deprecation, vulnerability, honesty, and metaphors had me laughing, crying, and empathizing throughout. Betty Gilpin’s narration made it feel like talking to a very funny, thoughtful friend.

First off, I thought the narration was fine. The audio quality changes at times, like the narrator turned his head or recorded on another device. But the narrator himself speaks clearly, does voices, and is easy to follow. I usually listen to audiobooks at 1.5 speed, but I sped this one up to 1.8-2.0 just to make it end sooner.

The story was needlessly long, detailed, repetitive, and full of exposition. I read the Hunger Games trilogy and admired that the author was concise even as she detailed a captivating story with good character development and insight. This book, the author tells (and tells and tells and tells) instead of shows, as was done so well in the original trilogy.

Snow was a pretty straight-forward villain in the trilogy. He wasn’t two dimensional and it was easy to imagine how a person ends up in his position. However, this book draws out the events that happened over the course of the 10th Hunger Games in Panem and Snow’s involvement, which sets his course for where he ends up in the trilogy. Not every villain needs an origin story! We didn’t need 30 chapters of countless mentions of food, winky references to the trilogy, and meandering play-by-plays of each day to understand how Snow set out on his course.

As other readers have said, it may take some time for listeners to acclimate to the writing of this story. At times the prose sounds like a stream of consciousness, Twitter drafts folder of thoughts and ideas going through the mind of the main character. Some of thoughts are funny, some are nonsense, some are half-baked, some are relatable, some are poignant.
The book seems to be a fictionalized memoir that follows the author/main character. It starts with the main character as an in-the-know internet personality who makes a living being ever connected to the “portal” and all that is trending there. Then, the main character reconsiders what she is prioritizing and how she is living life when her sister has a difficult pregnancy.
While I found many of the the character’s thoughts interesting, entertaining, and at times poignant, it was the humanity of the experience I appreciated most. The author captures well the nuanced experience that happens when you consider how precious life is and how your life changes as a result.

I loved this adaptation. Not only did it pay careful tribute to the original story, it bridged the gap between the time of Austen’s work to contemporary times to show how some societal customs haven’t gone away so much as changed forms. The author added insight to the characters in this novel that make me appreciate Austen’s characters in a new light. Excellent narration by the author.

This is a succinct, approachable introduction to Buddhism. It gives a brief history on its origins then proceeds to break down its tenants and practices. As someone with little familiarity with Buddhism, this was a perfect introduction for me. The chapters are organized well to build on each other, and include Q&A to guide you through the information. I appreciated how the author covered the spectrum of practice within Buddhism, including how to get started and resources to learn more.

This was a delightful story. I’m a chicken with a big imagination and tend to get scared easily, but this book is the kind of ghost story I like.

Ophelia is a young girl who finds out she can see ghosts. She learns how to help them along as their story intertwines with her time working as a servant at a large estate in 1920s Pittsburgh.

The story doesn’t shy away from the realities if the time and the sad history that shaped it. Family, both biological and chosen, are the center of this story. The narration is fantastic. Great listen for kids and adults.

You can't get much better than hearing stories of the Beastie Boys from two of the Beastie Boys themselves. The prologue about the late Adam Yauch at the beginning of the book was a touching way to honor their friend. I can only imagine what other insights MCA would have added to the book. The first chapter sets the stage of the music scene in the New York where the Beastie Boys came up, and the following chapters take you on the journey of the Beastie Boys over the years. It's a fun ride, interlaced with great insider stories from Ad-Rock and Mike D. I loved the various narrators throughout the book.

This story was so captivating and well-written that I listened to it over a weekend. The main characters are fleshed out over the story and feel like real people dealing with a difficult--and sadly, more familiar that it should be--situation. The author developed the arc of the main character's grief and how she processed the catalyzing event in an interesting, realistic way. The narrator kept the story moving at a good pace and made for an enjoyable listen.
