Historia
One late fall Sunday in Southern Minnesota, a farmer brings a load of soybeans to a local grain elevator - and a young man hits him on the head with a steel bar, drops him into the grain bin, waits until he's sure he's dead, and then calls the sheriff to report the "accident". Suspicious, the sheriff calls in Virgil Flowers, who quickly breaks the kid down...and the next day the boy's found hanging in his cell. Remorse? Virgil isn't so sure, and as he investigates he begins to uncover a multigeneration, multifamily conspiracy.

Historia
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

This is a Prequel
Revisado: 11-08-24
Although I am always loving to be back in Three Pines with people I have come to love, the ending of this one is SO disappointing. So many unanswered questions and so many threads not resolved. A good novel can set up future stories and at the same time feel complete and satisfying in itself. This wasn’t one of them. My least favorite of this series for that reason.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Amaze!
Revisado: 09-16-24
I loved the story, the characters and scientific details. The narrator perfectly captures the voices of Grace and Rocky. Like most great novels, this will stay with me. I think that “amaze!” Is my new word of wonderment and repeating a word three times my new method of emphasis. Thankful! Thankful! Thankful!

Historia
Gaia is dying. That, at least, is what Dr. Lionel Scott believes. A renowned expert in tropical and infectious diseases, Scott has witnessed the devastating impact of illness and turmoil at critical scale. Society as it exists is untenable, and the direct link to Earth’s death spiral; population levels are out of control and people have allowed disarray and disorder to run rampant. While most are concerned about deadly disease, Scott knows that it is truly humanity itself that will destroy Gaia.

What more can you ask in a novel? Characters you know and love, good verses evil, and people who are willing to step up to do what needs to be done for the benefit of others.

It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Childhood PTSD is Real
Revisado: 08-13-23
My father died in a plane crash in Vietnam in 1967. He was not in the military but was there as a civilian at the request of the US AID. At that time there was no such thing as grief counselors for kids, and everyone just went on with life as if nothing had changed. 50 years later, when I connected with the other children of the men who had also died in that crash, we all shared that common experience: “No one talked about it.”
My brothers’ lives were forever effected by PTSD. So even before Harry mentioned PTSD in this book, I knew what

The characters are engaging and (except for the villains) likable. The story has twists and turns to keep you guessing and interested. And those over 70 who are finding that younger people and society at large are dismissing and disregarding you will take even more pleasure in this series that celebrates a group of smart, caring, and creative seniors.

Historia
Journalist and self-proclaimed “crappy gardener” Tamar Haspel is on a mission: to show us that raising or gathering our own food is not as hard as it’s often made out to be. When she and her husband move from Manhattan to two acres on Cape Cod, they decide to adopt a more active approach to their diet: raising chickens, growing tomatoes, even foraging for mushrooms and hunting their own meat. They have more ambition than practical know-how, but that’s not about to stop them from trying…even if sometimes their reach exceeds their (often muddy) grasp.

Funny, Smart, and Growth Encouraging
Revisado: 03-28-23
There are several levels that readers can appreciate and enjoy this book. First of all, it will make you laugh out loud. Great comedic writing. Next, you'll appreciate the intelligent turn of phrase, or the perfect wording. My favorite? "The brain stem level of satisfaction" of raising your own food. Perfect. It's a book that will make foodies hungry and gardeners grin in recognition.
But beyond that is the story of a person...of you and me...being willing to try something new. A story of how when we give in and say "yes" to pushing ourselves into starting from scratch, learning new skills, we experience one of the best experiences that life has to offer.

If you grew up in the midwest in the late 1950's or the 1960's this book will resonate with you. If you like an American tale that includes characters that are as complicated as people are in real life, this book will appeal to you.
