Historia
It is impossible to understand our world today without understanding the last 100 years of Middle Eastern history. The history of the region in the 20th century is so varied and complex that it defies easy explanations. Shifting borders, governmental overthrows, ethnic and nationalist tensions, and political and economic forces on the world stage all had a hand in shaping the course of Middle Eastern history. Ultimately, however, the story is one of people searching for self-determination, from the stumbling alliances after the fall of the Ottoman Empire to the Arab Spring uprisings.

I wasn’t ready for it to end
Revisado: 12-21-23
There was so much information that was new to me in these lectures. Admittedly, I wasn’t well versed to begin with. So I suppose one could say that, for me, this was a perfect introduction to the Middle East.
The professor/lecturer is outstanding! He is engaging and knowledgeable. His enthusiasm for the subject is evident and infectious.
Overall, I am satisfied with this introduction to the region.
I’m definitely interested in learning more about its earlier history (which is covered in another course).
I highly recommend this 20th century review of the Middle East.

Historia
Killing the Witches revisits one of the most frightening and inexplicable episodes in American history: the events of 1692 and 1693 in Salem Village, Massachusetts. What began as a mysterious affliction of two young girls who suffered violent fits and exhibited strange behavior soon spread to other young women. Rumors of demonic possession and witchcraft consumed Salem. Soon three women were arrested under suspicion of being witches—but as the hysteria spread, more than 200 people were accused. Thirty were found guilty, twenty were executed, and others died in jail or their lives were ruined.

Historia
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) philosophy, the elements Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water are the foundation of how nature grows and evolves. They are believed to help us understand everything from illness and healing to the fundamental processes of child development - and they continue to inform Chinese medicine practice today. But as Ayurvedic nutritionist, reiki master, and Tournesol founder Carey Davidson demonstrates in this book, each of the five elements can also be seen as a personality archetype - and inside all of us is a unique blend of these archetypes....

Not my favorite. Disappointing overall.
Revisado: 07-30-23
I was expecting a better book than this delivered.
A couple of reasons:
First and foremost, her voice.
Omg HER VOICE!
A cross between a little child and valley girl. It was nearly impossible for me to even get the gist of this book because of that voice. Ugh.
Having said that, the content was ok but there was just too much repetition and redundancy (yes I meant to do that!)
;)
It may actually have been better than my review of it, however it just didn’t click with me.
Interesting material. I wish I could have enjoyed it.

Historia
Profanity has always been a deliciously vibrant part of our lexicon, an integral part of being human. In fact, our ability to curse comes from a different part of the brain than other parts of speech - the urgency with which we say "f--k!" is instead related to the instinct that tells us to flee from danger. Language evolves with time, and so does what we consider profane or unspeakable. Nine Nasty Words is a rollicking examination of profanity, explored from every angle: historical, sociological, political, linguistic.

Revisado: 07-19-23
How can I express how much I LOVED Mcwhorter’s reading of his own book? MOTHERF*IN’ BRILLIANT!
This guy rocks as a lecturer, an author, and as a narrator.
If he wrote it, I’m reading it.
He’s engaging, entertaining, interesting, funny, and actually teaches his listeners about language through his wit and insight.
Enthusiast FIVE STARS.

Language defines us as a species, placing humans head and shoulders above even the most proficient animal communicators. But it also beguiles us with its endless mysteries, allowing us to ponder why different languages emerged, why there isn't simply a single language, how languages change over time and whether that's good or bad, and how languages die out and become extinct.

This was one of my all time favorite courses offered by Great Courses!
John McWhorter is simply delightful! His enthusiasm, passion, knowledge, humor, delivery, etc etc etc are unparalleled!
Who says linguists and language are boring?
You know when you’re listening to a course and sometimes wish it was over already because it’s not super engaging? Well, there’s none of that here. He makes learning FUN!
I learned a lot. And I laughed along the way. What more do you want?!
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

New & interesting perspective
Revisado: 11-08-22
Concise and quick read/listen.
I enjoyed this new perspective on history. Relating events of the time with the specific beverage of its day was terribly interesting to me.
It’s not a particularly deep dive but it gives just enough information to keep you engaged.
I’d recommend this book for anyone who likes a different take on historical events, as well as the casual reader.
It’s definitely good information to have for your next social gathering — cheers!

Historia
Ukraine's sudden prominence in American politics has compounded an already-widespread misunderstanding of what is actually happening in the nation. In the American media, Ukraine has come to signify an inherently corrupt place, rather than a real country struggling in the face of great challenges. Ukraine: What Everyone Needs to Know addresses Ukraine's relations with the West, particularly the United States, from the perspective of Ukrainians.

Important history and current events
Revisado: 06-07-22
Ukraine has obviously become front page news since Russia’s invasion and unprovoked war against this sovereign nation.
I thought that getting some basic background about Ukraine would be helpful in following the conflict, thus I eagerly enlisted this book in my quest for a deeper understanding of the land of my family’s roots.
This book does a better than average job of putting Ukraine’s history, as well as current events into context. But, it leaves me wanting more.
While it’s not everything everyone needs to know on the topic of Ukraine, it’s certainly better than what most Americans know — which is sadly not much!
While it’s not super entertaining, nor does the narrator keep the listener at the edge of his/her seat, it’s definitely a worthwhile listen.
Hopefully this book will be a catalyst for learning even more about Україна … as it has been for me.

Things I knew, things I didn’t. Great refresher on the Revolutionary War and those that fought
Revisado: 02-22-22
Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard wrote an informative, interesting and entertaining book that lends itself very well to Audible.
It’s enlightening on bits and pieces that I was unaware of.
While it’s not quite a deep dive, it absolutely educates those with no prior knowledge (or very little).
This would be a good primer for a high school or college student entering into a class on the subject. I believe it would be helpful to their overall understanding of the material and could well boost their grade!
I thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end.
Robert Petkoff was an excellent narrator. He did a terrific job at keeping the listener engaged.
I look forward to other books from O’Reilly’s “Killing” series.

Revisado: 02-15-22
I give this book by author Bill Bryson, narrated by Richard Matthews an ENTHUSIASTIC 5 STARS!
I would give more if I could!
It is chock full of information; maybe not quite “nearly everything” but a whole helluva lot.
Entertaining, engaging, enlightening, informative, and just so darn enjoyable that the 18+ hours left me wanting even more!!
The author dives into so many areas of interest.
The narrator has a splendid take on the text; his reading certainly added to the overall experience.
Physics, environment, space, chemistry, natural sciences, biology, climate etc etc etc!! This should be required reading for people from young to old. There really is something that we can all learn within these pages.

Entertaining more that educational
Revisado: 01-24-22
I struggled whether to give this an overall 3 or 4 star rating. I settled on 4 because I do believe that it’s an enjoyable time spent listening to a little story about the royals and history of its time.
It’s much more entertaining than it is informative however.
There are sound effects thrown in that don’t add to the listening experience. I’d rather hear the reader without the horse sounds and China clatter.
All in all, if you’re wishing for a brief “Cliff Notes” version then this just might be up your alley.
Good but not great.
