Historia
We all think we know the South. Even those who have never lived there can rattle off a list of signifiers: the Civil War, Gone with the Wind, the Ku Klux Klan, plantations, football, Jim Crow, slavery. But the idiosyncrasies, dispositions, and habits of the region are stranger and more complex than much of the country tends to acknowledge. In South to America, Imani Perry shows that the meaning of American is inextricably linked with the South, and that our understanding of its history and culture is the key to understanding the nation as a whole.

Loved the writing and taught a lot the south from an African American perspective that I wasn’t aware of. The writer wasn’t critical of the region, just objective. She also told me information about Ronald Reagan I found disturbing

In In Order to Live, Yeonmi Park shines a light not just into the darkest corners of life in North Korea, describing the deprivation and deception she endured and which millions of North Korean people continue to endure to this day, but also onto her own most painful and difficult memories. She tells with bravery and dignity for the first time the story of how she and her mother were betrayed and sold into sexual slavery in China and forced to suffer terrible psychological and physical hardship before they finally made their way to Seoul, South Korea - and to freedom.

Depressing but wonderful
Revisado: 09-15-23
I could barely get through the book, so much of it was depressing and tragic. Of course I knew she survived because she wrote the book. I’m glad she did because her story needed to be told because so many others in North Korea are silenced.

No other book has so strongly influenced the environmental conscience of Americans and the world at large.

Impressive
Revisado: 07-25-23
I grew up knowing about this most influential book. Our son, who is now 20, has seen bald eagles in the wild. When I was 20, in the 70’s we could only see bald eagles in zoos, or in movies. Never in the wild. Great work Rachel!

Revisado: 05-20-23
I loved the book and narrator!! Both were intriguing! I am Hard of Hearing which makes listening to foreign accents difficult and dyslexic which makes reading frustrating! I appreciated the narrators ability to draw me into this book! I LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF THE BOOK! Thank you so much for the wonderful interpretation of the manuscript. Lovely! I found myself in every setting wanting more and getting what I sought after!

Sappy
Revisado: 06-09-22
This book is as sappy as the title suggests, and I loved it. We need more answers to the world’s problems like showing more gratitude. We can’t always keep wringing our hands worried about how we can make a difference when sometimes the solution to happier times is easily within our grasp.

Historia
At one time, Corrie ten Boom would have laughed at the idea that she had a story to tell. For the first 50 years of her life, nothing out of the ordinary ever happened to her. She was a spinster watchmaker living contentedly with her sister and their elderly father in the tiny house over their shop in Haarlem. Their uneventful days, as regulated as their own watches, revolved around their abiding love for one another. But with the Nazi invasion and occupation of Holland, everything changed....

What a gift
Revisado: 05-30-21
Cory’s life was a gift to humanity. It’s so sad that such a terrible tragedy such a WWII made it necessary for such super human courage to be displayed. Not everyone is able to show such forgiveness or to have such faith. It’s good that some genuinely do.
