I liked the different stories woven all throughout and all the side characters that go with each. It's a pretty bleak book and I expected that going in and was happy that it didn't end as bleak as I expected. Thankfully, it's not a super long listen and the author didn't drag things out and he left me sympathetic to many characters along the way, even when bad decisions were made.

Great pacing!

I found myself always engaged with the story or at least I never found any parts boring or wished was omitted. It's a really great story and I loved going alongside Aaron in his journey. The narrator was excellent as well!

Before I read this book, I was told that the less you know, the better and it definitely ended up that way. I started off very into the story and as things progressed, it got weird and I could see why some wouldn't want to stick with it but I advise that you should. I'm also not saying the pay off is mind blowing but I was pleased when I finished it and you can't say that about every book.

Perhaps, because it was short, I expected more of a punch to it? I like the scenes of the therapy group the most and thought the ending was kind of meh?

If possible, don't go camping with a murderous little boy named Enzo? The story is upfront at the beginning that nobody makes it out alive- so that's not a spoiler. I was curious about this story and I thought it would hit me harder because of what you're getting into but it didn't. Still a good story to check out!

For some reason, I couldn't really connect with the main character, Lou. I liked his daughter a lot more, so I found it harder to be invested in what happens to them. Overall, I thought it was a good story but things I thought would happen and looked forward to, didn't and I felt kinda bummed.

Pacing

I enjoyed the story, characters and the performance of the narrator but I found the pacing of the book to be slightly annoying. With all the different points of view, especially towards the last bit. it was like he tried to leave every view on a cliff hanger and then switch to a different point of view. It picked up quickly enough for it to only be a slight irritation. otherwise, I enjoyed the story!

It's a heavy little thing, this novella but it's also very human. In my mind, we've all reached a little too far and saw something that you could never comprehend how long it would stay with you. That's what this book is about. It's not happy at any point, really and expect an ending just as grim as the warning at the beginning. Like the warning said, don't listen to this if it'll affect you too much. Your mental health is worth more than a good story rooted in a true event.

I really grew to love our main character and it was hard to listen as bad decisions were made but I often have to remind myself of what genre I'm reading. it's a wild ride with a good deal of uncomfortable bits, some of which are very relevant to the social climate we live in. the narrator was really great! I especially loved his voice for Brian and any old lady. definitely recommend!

usually books start off slow and it feels kind of a drag but with this one, I was interested right away. the basic premise of 4 horror writers dealing with something that belongs in their books is basically a chefs kiss to me. the ending was also great! I definitely recommend this!
