Captivating and Deep
Revisado: 01-07-23
This has become one of my favorite novels. If you are a Dostoevsky fan, this has all the struggle and depth but a more human, engrossing, and relatable experience. I highly recommend listening to the audio while reading the book to get a handle on the pronunciation and names. Kristin and Erland are such dynamic characters - lovable, detestable, fickle, arrogant, selfish… but very real. The historical depiction of Norway in the 1300s, being a tumultuous time, meticulously captures a snapshot of the customs and thought of the time period on par with Tolstoy. I cannot recommend this book more highly.

Historia
J.R.R. Tolkien famously described the Second Age of Middle-earth as a ‘dark age, and not very much of its history is (or need be) told’. And for many years readers would need to be content with the tantalizing glimpses of it found within the pages of The Lord of the Rings and its appendices, including the forging of the Rings of Power, the building of the Barad-dûr and the rise of Sauron.

Wonderful Listen!

I was hesitant about someone taking over after Christopher Tolkien, but Brian Sibley honored the Tolkien legacy to a tee. Samuel West was phenomenal as usual.

Historia
In a sleepy village in the Shire, a young hobbit is entrusted with an immense task. He must make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ruling Ring of Power - the only thing that prevents the Dark Lord Sauron’s evil dominion. Thus begins J. R. R. Tolkien’s classic tale of adventure, which continues in The Two Towers and The Return of the King.

A must-listen
Revisado: 09-04-22
I’ve read the LOTRs numerous times but this was my first listen. It was a whole new way to experience the book and so enjoyable. Andy Serkis was incredible, giving each character a unique and distinct voice. Highly recommend!

Historia
Set in the Five Points neighborhood of New York City, in the years 1857-1863, when America's attitudes toward people of color and slavery shifted—painfully, transformationally—to the point where a war that began to restore the union becomes one that owes much to Black fighting regiments, and common cause grows for the abolition of slavery. We experience the daily life of Five Points through the eyes of Theo, aged seven at the start of the book and 13 at its close. Theo is half Black and half Irish, an orphan living between the homes of her Black and Irish grandparents.

Masterpiece of Historical Fiction
Revisado: 07-16-22
I recommend this book most highly! I bought the novel and had a hard time getting the rhythm and cadence of Theo’s voice. I’m so glad I got the Audible because the narrator brings the book to life. I “listen-read” this book and it was an absolutely moving, epic, and very educational story. Best book I’ve read this year.
