This could have been one short story with just the Vulkan/Cruze stuff and been pretty good. Every other storyline was meaningless and went nowhere. Too many characters that had no bearing on the overall plot. Narration wasn’t terrible apart from the John Gramatticus voice that I found to be very annoying. Skip this one. I wish I had.

I loved this series as a teenager, and it’s awesome finally getting audio versions of the books. Better than the first one, as it’s more of a cohesive story as opposed to a collection of short stories. Keep releasing them, and I’ll keep buying them. Old Warhammer fantasy is way more interesting than the incomprehensible Age of Sigmar stuff that GW is releasing now.

Absolutely fantastic. Anspach, and Cole delivered another great entry in the series. Keep writing them!

I really wanted to like this book. The narration, as usual, was fantastic. I just felt the book was kind of jumbled and the tone was all over the place. I enjoyed most of the short stories, but things began to fall apart with the actual new novel. In particular, the title character, the Magos I found to be very annoying and out of place in the overall story. His tone was way too comedic and quippy in a way that wouldn't be out of a place in a Marvel movie. I just don't feel like it fit. Also, I had no idea what he was even doing in the novel, as he didn't seem to have any purpose to the mission the inquisitor was on as opposed to being a contrarian to Eisenhorn. Also, the central...device at the heart of the story felt like a McGuffin that was never explained despite it's importance.

What would have made Charlemagne better?

There was absolutely no need for this book to be anywhere nearly as long as it was. "We don't know anything about Charlemagne directly, but let me ramble about tangentially related topics for 30 hours." Summed it up for you. Also, the author is assuming you are already incredibly well versed with European history at this point, and does next to nothing to actually help you out. I'm honestly not sure who this book is for. European history professors?
