Historia
One of five children, Pat watched as her alcoholic mother struggled to get by on charity, cons, and petty crimes. At age seven, Pat was taught to roll drunks for money. At 12, she was targeted for sex by a man eight years her senior; by 13, she was pregnant. By 15, Pat was a mother of two. Alone at 16, Pat was determined to make a better life for her children. But with no job skills and an eighth-grade education, her options were limited. She learned quickly that hustling and humor were the only tools she had to survive.

Two Thumbs Up...
Revisado: 11-16-21
From the very beginning, I thought this feels raw and real...I was not wrong! This book is full of truths and a real one-on-one account of one young lady's experience.
This is a story of extreme survival skills applied while living in da hood.
Kudos to Rabbit...You've shown through your eyes that you can rise above the circumstances you find yourself born into. I got so tickled at times, I knew what you described couldn't have been made up and that it was completely true.
Being an Atlanta native, I knew every neighborhood that was described. I highly recommend this book.

Historia
In the little city of Flint, Michigan, the good die young, and the people left standing are the grimiest of characters. With reign over the city's drug trade, Benjamin Atkins made sure that his precious daughter, Raven, was secluded from the grit that the city had to offer. But when Raven's young heart gets claimed by Mizan, a stick-up kid in search of a come-up, there's nothing Benjamin can do about losing her to the streets.

When you listen to this audiobook, you will make many assumptions. You will assume you are listening to a story about a jealous ex-wife. You will assume she is obsessed with her replacement - a beautiful, younger woman who is about to marry the man they both love. You will assume you know the anatomy of this tangled love triangle. Assume nothing. Twisted and deliciously chilling, The Wife Between Us exposes the secret complexities of an enviable marriage - and the dangerous truths we ignore in the name of love.

Historia
When two Union soldiers stumble onto a plantation in northern Georgia on a warm May day in 1864, the last thing they expect is to see the Union flag flying high - or to be greeted by a group of freed slaves and their Jewish mistress. Little do they know that this place has an unusual history. Twelve years prior, Adelaide Mannheim - daughter of Mordecai, the only Jewish planter in the county - was given her own maid, a young slave named Rachel. The two became friends, and soon they discovered a secret.

A Story of Making Do and Getting Along
Revisado: 06-22-18
Life as a Slave was brutal...Life as a Person of Color is still Hard...I don't understand why in 2018 that we can't accept each other without looking at skin color. I loved the end of this story...it provided a view of what true love for humanity looks like.

Historia
Jubilee tells the true story of Vyry, the child of a white plantation owner and his black mistress. Vyry bears witness to the South's antebellum opulence and to its brutality, its wartime ruin, and the promises of Reconstruction. Weaving her own family's oral history with 30 years of research, Margaret Walker's novel brings the everyday experiences of slaves to light. Jubilee churns with the hunger, the hymns, the struggles, and the very breath of American history.

How Did We Survive?
Revisado: 06-12-18
I just keep reading these narratives and keep wondering how on earth are people of color still existing in the USA. The unashamed acts that were inflicted made me shed unchecked tears. My heart aches for my ancestors and for me and mine still today, simply because the oppression continues, it's just packaged differently.
Times are better, but by no means is the domineering over. We were good enough to birth, breatfeed and raise their young, but in the same breath filthy, no good, lazy, diseased N*****s....
