As they raise their son, Olivier, they hold on to a tenuous promise for the future. Until the thunder of war sets off alarms in France. Staying behind to join the resistance, Giles sends Madeleine and Olivier to the relative safety of England, where Madeleine secures a job teaching French at a secondary school. Yet nowhere is safe. Rhys does it again!
Revisado: 08-19-23
I really enjoyed this book. Rhys Bowen doesn't mince words & at times it is harrowing but well researched. The narrator was good for the most part. Unfortunately the Aussie accent alluded her. It is so difficult unless you are Australian. Just a tip Australian readers can do other English accents well so perhaps consider an Australian to read if large portions of the book are set there. Indeed this was another page turner I would highly recommend.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing. But it's the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute take a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant Nobel-prize-nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Terrific, surprisingly poignant & speaks to women of all ages. A crazy ride rich with character. If you were a young woman in the sixties you will relate. All other readers will gain great insights. Don't forget to listen to the author interview at the end!

Historia
Over the last decade, we have become better at knowing what brings us contentment, well-being and joy. We know, for example, that there are a few core truths to science of happiness. We know that being kind and altruistic makes us happy, that turning off devices, talking to people, forging relationships, living with meaning and delving into the concerns of others offer our best chance at achieving happiness. But how do we retain happiness? It often slips out of our hands as quickly as we find it. So, when we are exposed to, or learn, good things, how do we continue to burn with them?

What a joy to listen to & reflect on how we live & try to thrive in an increasingly complex & harsh world. You will find hope & faith in this book. As a middle aged woman I saw myself my friends & my story. Thank you Julia!

I loved Delia Owens' Where the Crawdad's sing last year. Trying to find an equally good story was hard until I stumbled across this wonderful coming of age story. Characters are beautifully portrayed, the scenery breathtaking & intricately described. It's a page turner & I highly recommend.
