Historia
Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

500 page too long bodice ripper
Revisado: 02-10-23
A listened through this entire book, waiting for it to get better. It often seemed in the verge of doing so, but kept falling back into long, tedious, stilted dialog and angsty internal monologue that never redeemed itself. It is a slightly twisted romance novel something like War and Peace without the war and classism. Although the classism of New Orleans is explored somewhat. The narration was competent, except for the very strange idea of what New Orleans accents sound like, but given that 80 percent or so of the narrative was voice by male characters, it seems a little odd, and unfair to the performer, to have chosen to have a woman read. I am unlikely to continue the series, but, if you liked the print version there is probably no reason not to get this version.

ok, but predictable formula monster story
Revisado: 01-21-23
The performances were good but the dialog was stilted in spots. No spoilers but the story arc is typical crypto creature fodder. Not terrible but don't expect anything new.

ok, but very derivative
Revisado: 04-11-21
The story is very similar to "IT" with a few other Kingisms so don't expect much new. The author's has a character use the "n" word so many times in the course of telling a story that it is quite gratuitous and there is ne redeeming reason for it. Yes, King has characters who use the "n" word but, for the most part, it is to clearly define the character as repugnant and always the character suffers the consequences of their nature eventually. The kids are supposed to be 8-12 but all are written with attributes well beyond that age. The story arch is choppy and predictable. The reader is not very fluid at all and after over 20 hours, it was a relief not to have to hear him any more. Not a grating voice, but painful nontheless

A period piece, but enjoyable
Revisado: 03-30-21
This is a fun, if niece by today's standards, tromp through hypnosis, psi, psychology and suburban 70s that doubles as a passable murder mystery. Scott Brick is not quite as monotone as he is on some of RM's other titles, but still not a very dynamic performance.

Love the concept , ending is weak
Revisado: 01-09-21
This book was a pretty good listen. The performance of some parts was pretty grating though from the male narrator. The ending just disperses into nothing and was not at all satisfying. The core concept of a deaf character in a horror where creatures attack sound was good but frankly underdeveloped. A shame, because some parts were quite good, but never really blossomed.

maybe average short story...awful as a long one
Revisado: 01-03-21
This was never very good but it quickly became cloying, repetitive and just plain boring. I listened through it because the endorsements from the likes of Joe Hill made me wonder how something so bad could have gotten such kudos. I have even lost any remaing faith I had in the audible ratings based on this book. I have no idea how this could have gotten so many good ratings in any legitimate manner.

The Stand, Firestarter and a bit of the Mist
Revisado: 12-04-20
The writing is pretty solid and the characters fairly three dimensional. It is enjoyable, but not terribly original. Stephen King fans will no doubt find it very derivative. But the narration is excellent and if you need a bit of an apocalyptic tale for a commute or road trip, this might fill the bill.
Not exactly a spoiler but, an interesting debate could be had as to whether anything after six days ago really happened.

I have read everything Dickens has written but this was my first book by Wilkie Collins. It is much more a Romantic style than Dickens but a pleasent escape to period.
