Lacks Charm and Empathy
Revisado: 12-16-20
While Wil Wheaton is an excellent narrator, the story just doesn't have the charm or soul of the first book.

Historia
You are a failed novelist about to turn 50. A wedding invitation arrives in the mail: Your boyfriend of the past nine years is engaged to someone else. You can't say yes - it would be too awkward - and you can't say no - it would look like defeat. On your desk are a series of invitations to half-baked literary events around the world. Question: How do you arrange to skip town? Answer: You accept them all.

A Surprisingly Satisfying Journey
Revisado: 03-31-20
Based off past experience with modern gay fiction, my expectations were low. What a wonderful surprise this turned out to be!
Arthur Less is such a believably flawed and insecure person. It felt like I'd had brunch with him, or at least overheard him at the next table over.
His journey through middle age, love, and rediscovery was so well done, I was left in tears at the end. A beautiful gem worth a listen.

Historia
In 2007, the Center for Automation in Nanobiotech (CAN) outlined the hardware and software platform that would one day allow robots smaller than human cells to make medical diagnoses, conduct repairs, and even self-propagate. In the same year, a simple pill, it had been discovered, could wipe out the memory of any traumatic event. At almost the same moment in humanity's broad history, mankind had discovered the means for bringing about its utter downfall - and the ability to forget it ever happened.

Disappointing Sequel, Monotone Execution
Revisado: 03-31-20
While I loved Silo, Shift continues the story, but with little to no tone variation. The word that kept coming to mind was, "bleak." Which sounds good at a distance (the outside world has ended), but in practice feels unbelievable. In the midst of the most dire of situations, humanity still finds some sort of levity and joy. Shift has none of that.
That monotone feeling offers no relief over its 18+ hours. Further, the book doesn't give *that* much more clarity beyond what Silo already hinted at.
I kept hoping for some big reveal. Some sort of reward for withstanding the story's brutal gloom, but there just isn't any.

Great Story & Narration, save 1 Narrator
Revisado: 02-07-18
What made the experience of listening to Iron Gold the most enjoyable?
The three narrators were an interesting choice. The characters were distinct from one another which was nice when their stories were distinctly separate. As their stories became more interwoven, a single character would be voiced by different narrators, depending on the perspective. The varying accents took a little bit to get used to.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
The narrator for Lysander needs to keep his vocal range a bit closer together. He needs to stop whispering all the time. Either that or the audio engineer needs to balance his narration out better. I kept rewinding, turning up the volume, then blasting my speakers out when he was done saying a sentence. The other narrators were fine.

Historia
Golan Trevize, former councilman of the First Foundation, has chosen the future, and it is Gaia. A superorganism, Gaia is a holistic planet with a common consciousness so intensely united that every dewdrop, every pebble, every being, can speak for all - and feel for all. It is a realm in which privacy is not only undesirable, it is incomprehensible. But is it the right choice for the destiny of mankind? While Trevize feels it is, that is not enough. He must know.

Great Story, Mediocre Narration
Revisado: 04-21-16
The narrator sounds like an elaborate, automated text-to-voice program. His staccato delivery finally starts to ease into something more natural sounding about 2/3 of the way through. Otherwise the story is a fantastic continuation on the Foundation series.

Historia
Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.

Dull and uninspired
Revisado: 09-21-14
What disappointed you about Redshirts?
The characters are just as dull as their scifi counterparts with a storyline that's equally uninspired. There's an attempt to be "meta" but it all comes across as uninteresting. There are many characters, none of whom you care much for. So when they do die it's no great loss.

Historia
The Wisdom of Compassion offers rare insights into the Dalai Lama’s life and his efforts to translate compassion into action through deeply engaging, behind-the-scene stories about his interactions with remarkable people from all walks of life. This is the Dalai Lama at his most human, and most humane. We see how he approaches the world with playfulness, optimism, and a profound empathy for the suffering of others. Through his own conduct, he shows us the tangible benefits of practicing kindness, forgiveness, and compassion.

This is a fantastic way to start your day. There isn't a real narrative which normally bothers me, but didn't here. This is a collection of experiences and encounters with an amazing human being.

Banal, rambling, and trite
Revisado: 02-19-13
What didn’t you like about the narrator’s performance?
The author spends the first 6 minutes just trying to convince the listener of why they should listen to him. I kept thinking, "Shut up and let your insights legitimize you if there are any." And, sadly, there are none. This is like any other self-help book out there. It's cotton candy empowerment techniques. Gems like "everyone's a leader" and "change is scary, but necessary" are things I'd read on Buzzfeed or some other shallow blog. For substantive insights into leadership and affecting people check out "The Power of Habit" by Charles Duhigg or "Switch" by Chip & Dan Heath. Leave Mr. Sharma to keep trying to legitimize himself.
