Our gut is almost as important to us as our brain, yet we know very little about how it works. Gut: The Inside Story is an entertaining, informative tour of the digestive system from the moment we raise a tasty morsel to our lips until the moment our body surrenders the remnants to the toilet bowl. No topic is too lowly for the author's wonder and admiration, from the careful choreography of breaking wind to the precise internal communication required for a cleansing vomit.

Very informative
Revisado: 11-07-23
I learned a lot from listening to this book, knew the gut was very important but not to this extent. My only criticism is the reader, fancy accent and all but had to hit the rewind button often because I kept losing focus from the way she read.

The research is incomplete or outdated or biased
Revisado: 06-20-17
The author is either biases towards an all vegan diet even though he says he does not advocate a vegetarian/vegan diet but he clearly does.
He seems to put all the western diseases on meat, when he does not take into account the large amounts of sugar consumption which is responsible for these chronic diseases.
He is also outdated on the issue of cholesterol, and gives simplistic examples of good and bad cholesterol, suggesting LDL cholesterol is bad like we have been taught to believe our whole lives, but this is irresponsible as an MD because the bad cholesterol is pattern B small density particle LDL which is caused by...sugar, which he does not take into account.
Also he is under the old belief that saturated cholesterol is bad, such as coconut oil when in fact it raises HDL cholesterol and is anti-bacterial. The bad oils are polyunsaturated omega 6 oils like vegetable oils which cause inflammation and oxidizes the LDL cholesterol into the small density pattern B which sticks to the arterial walls and worse if they are inflamed.
He also mentions that omega 3's are useless which is completely ridiculous. Vegans/vegetarians are more proned to dementia/Alzheimers disease from a lack of omega 3's.
In between all this lack of factual information, there is a lot of interesting information, but I suggest reading many other books and not only believe the information in this book.

The information is very good and I enjoyed learning from it, however constantly hearing the reader swallow and make mouth noises drastically diminishes the performance of this book.

Historia
Of all the peoples of the ancient Near East, the Phoenicians are among the most recognizable but also perhaps the least understood. The Phoenicians never built an empire like the Egyptians and Assyrians; in fact, the Phoenicians never created a unified Phoenician state. Instead, they existed as independent city-state kingdoms scattered throughout the Mediterranean region.

Revisado: 03-03-17
Seems to be well researched but really no way for the average person of knowing for a fact if this is a definitive report, could easily be someone else's propaganda. Really hard to get into it and struggled getting through this book till the end. Also not very fond of the narrator for this type if audiobook.

The story of the Silk Road has been a popular topic among tourists, academics, economists, state parties, and daydreaming children for many centuries. In many ways the Silk Road can be seen everywhere, and it has existed for as long as people have traveled across Eurasia. Its impact is widely felt among the diverse peoples that live on the continent, through the unique regional art and architectural styles, as well as in countless films, books, academic studies, and organized tours devoted to the ancient trade routes.

Monotone reader
Revisado: 02-28-17
The information is excellent as always by Charles River Editors, however the readers are always monotone which makes it difficult to follow, a little emotion or expression would go a long way. Also the reader mispronounces certain words which makes it sound like he doesn't know what he's talking about.

Historia
"The Prince" is the most famous of Machiavelli's works; it gives very clear, precise and realistic instructions on how to gain and maintain power, fortune, and glory, sometimes at the expense of others. Written in 1513, it is one of the most feared and hated political treatises, taken to be the first work in which the effect the leader desires to achieve is taken as more important than any abstract ideal or ethical value that might prevent him from taking immoral action.

Historia
For centuries in the Western world, during what is known as the Middle Ages, written knowledge was guarded closely and hidden away in private repositories, usually by the religious classes. The lack of libraries in the West has helped contribute to the popular imagination of the ancient Library at Alexandria and all the myths and legends that have come to be associated with it, but the Library of Alexandria deserves its reputation.

Informative audiobook about the library of Alexandria, a great place to start if your interested in the subject. The narrator sounded like a computer reading a text file which made it difficult to get into the book more.
