Historia
When Brian Holloway (Jack Quaid, The Boys) was hired by famous horror author Paul Robinette (Titus Welliver, Bosch) to crack an antique safe in his home, he had no idea what he was about to encounter. Opening that safe door unleashed something sinister — something that continues to haunt him. But what exactly? And can whatever slipped through that threshold be stopped?

Historia
In May 1996, two skilled backcountry leaders, Lollie Winans and Julie Williams, entered Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park for a week-long backcountry camping trip. The free-spirited and remarkable young couple had met and fallen in love the previous summer while working at a world-renowned outdoor program for women. During their final days in the park, they descended the narrow remnants of a trail and pitched their tent in a hidden spot. After the pair didn’t return home as planned, park rangers found a scene of horror at their campsite.

What an engaging story.
Revisado: 02-23-24
Excellent from start to finish! Well researched, but also as compelling is the writer’s own journey thru the book.

Terrible narration
Revisado: 08-11-23
I hate to be negative but the narration is awful. Would be ok for a single characters point of view, but for a multiple character book, no. American accents were laughable, but even the Scottish and English accents were all the same and lacked emotion. Hard to tell characters apart and just no personality comes thru. Mo and Dr Petra apparently left their personalities behind when they arrived at this case. Narrator for the other books by this author did a much better job bringing the characters and the stories to life. Was probably a good story, but it just fell flat with the reading.

Why?
Revisado: 06-13-23
I never leave reviews either good or bad, but felt I had to here.
This book started with promise, interesting premise. Then you get into the whodunnit, so far so good. Likable detective, good banter. ***Don’t read further for spoilers***
Victim becomes villain, we’ve seen this before, so ok. But as story unravels, nobody is spared. At end, every single character, and I mean every, has been completely destroyed. There is no redemption or sliver of hope for any of them.
Especially the last plot twist left me wondering, what was the point of this book unless it was to make the reader feel bad? There was no message (and the one tagged in at the end had no relation to the story, so nice try but didn’t work- that the older generation died to make way for the future, but the story was about a young girl dying and the effect on the survivors!?!?
At the end, it seemed like AI concocted this story based on like books, it grabbed disparate plot lines, threw them together in a blender, added a moral to the story that had no relation and called it a book.
Would never recommend and would never read this author again. Just an awful depressing read. I’m sorry to be so harsh.

Good story
Revisado: 11-03-22
This book took me a while to get into, but I am glad I stuck with it. Took a little time to get around to the essence of the story and to puzzle out where the flashback story was going to connect with the present but ultimately it came together well.

Historia
The Gardener Estate is one of the most storied and beloved places on the West Coast: a magnificent house in vast formal grounds, home to a family that shaped California—and fought hard to conceal the turmoil and eccentricities within their walls. And now, just as the turmoil seems buried and the Estate prepares to move into a new future, construction work unearths a grim relic of the estate's history: a skull, hidden away some fifty years ago.

Thought it was a well constructed story and found it interesting start to finish. A few questions unanswered, so wondering if there will be additional books ahead. Narration was very good as well.

I love this author!
Revisado: 07-05-21
Found this author on Audible, now I’m working my way thru all of her books and have enjoyed every one of them. Stories are well paced. Love the humor that comes thru, love the description of LA that serves as background to her books. I also LOVE the narration.
