The first Don Winslow book that wasn’t phenomenal…
Revisado: 06-11-23
Winslow has become my favorite author. Power of the Dog, The Cartel, California Fire and Life, The Dawn Patrol. I await the next Winslow novel like a kid waiting for Xmas.
I’ve NEVER not been blown away and crushed every time they ended by a Don Winslow novel, until now.
This is the sequel to another book which was great as always. When I heard this was coming I was ecstatic! Just like I always am when a new DW book is coming to audible.
I couldn’t believe it.
When this book was ended I was indeed blown away! But not bcuz of how amazing it was, but that it could possibly be over already!
It just didn’t have that DW greatness. The story was kinda boring and the ending was meh…
Don’t get me wrong now! This book is still better than 75% of what’s available on audible! But when compared to other DW novels I feel it falls short.
I’m disappointed as a fan but if this was my first DW novel I would still definitely be looking for more of his work, that’s a given!
If you are a Winslow fan, u may be let down a bit, maybe not, Idk.
If you have never read Winslow before I suggest reading Power Of The Dog (Mob/Cartel stuff) OR The Dawn Patrol (surfer true crime) depending on what u like. Certainly reading the first one in this series first, assuming that’s not why I are here…

This is a multiple choice test, in audio…
It makes no sense to listen to them ask the questions then sit there while they read through 4 multiple choice answers until finally revealing the correct one.
If u don’t see the problem, by listening to all these wrong answers you will inevitably remember lots of those wrong answers and when u are at the DMV taking the test and they questions are inevitably asked differently then they practice test, you won’t know which answers where the wrong one and which were the right ones but u most likely won’t remember every answer so u just hope u are lucky and remember the right one…
Would have made WAY WAY more sense just to read the question and then explain the answers.
The way they did it you have to listen to the question then try to fast forward to when they just reveal the answer so as not to fill your head with all the bunk info.
That works but defeats the purpose of a hands free audio book bcuz u literally have to be tapping buttons back n forth trying to avoid hearing all the wrong info… u get it.
So if that’s not a problem for you, if u have the type of mind that can remember everything you hear and can compartmentalize all the wrong answers from the right ones, well then you should probably be studying to be an engineer or heart surgeon…but u might like this book.

Historia
You were on your way home when you died. It was a car accident. Nothing particularly remarkable, but fatal nonetheless. You left behind a wife and two children. It was a painless death. The EMTs tried their best to save you, but to no avail. Your body was so utterly shattered you were better off, trust me. And that’s when you met me." A short story about the universe.

God, that felt good!
Revisado: 01-27-23
I’m not gonna do a big long review here, I always know I’m gonna love anything read by Ray Porter, and I really dug The Martian so I gave it a shot, I never thought for a second I could possibly be balling like a child at the end (well, teared up once or twice in the middle too ngl.).
You’ve read the synopsis and the other reviews, so just add the fact that this book is gonna make you feel a whole range of emotions some great some hard but man what a ride!

Historia
“The Heron” is the nickname a big-city accountant has attached to himself in his new home near San Diego, where he’s using the alias to avoid a hit man who may be after him. It seems a former client believes that The Heron has skipped town with several million dollars not his own. Don Winslow’s ensuing, entertaining yarn is by turns twisty, dark, and comical as we observe the delicate dance between the pursuer and the pursued.

Revisado: 11-23-22
This was the only audiobook of Don Winslows I haven’t listened to (except the German language ones. Speaking of which I’m still mad he wrote an entire book called Germany that will never be released in English 🤦♂️😩🤬🤷♂️) I digress…
The Heron is a decent little story and definitely has Don Winslows cool true crime style, this is his typical fare of hit men and witty protagonists who always outsmart their rivals.💯🔥👌Excellent.

Fun and cool. Winslow can do no wrong.
Revisado: 11-22-22
Full disclosure: I’ve devoured everything available from Don Winslow on Audible so I may be biased.
This is a short story that incorporates some of our favorite surfer characters from Dons stable, like Dave The Love God, Boone, and Sunny. Billy is a free spirited “surf-bum” who lives day to day scarfing free sample and continental breakfasts in random hotels while sleeping in his VW Bus.
If you’re looking for Winslows violent crime stuff this isn’t the one, try Power of the Dog or The Cartel… Free Billy is more along the lines of simple con artist stuff and non violent petty crimes, it’s much more about the characters than anything.
If u have an hour and a half to kill this is a very fun and cool Don Winslow surf story.🤙

Historia
In Deep Hole, one of the world’s foremost crime novelists crafts a sweet, poignant romance novella that could only come from his perfectly calibrated sense of time and place. It incorporates fights and misunderstandings and rejection, and is set against the backdrop of a quiet surfing town in Rhode Island where everyone knows each other’s business—and pleasure.

Winslow is THE MAN!
Revisado: 07-07-22
I’ve “read” every audio book written by Don Winslow, plus read some physical books they don’t have on Audible. He is my favorite author which I found bcuz of his book Satori, then I watched Savages with Benicia DelToro and then the book.
“Power of the Dog” came next and solidified my favorite author as Don Winslow.
I cannot recommend his novels enuff.
This is a short 1hr story and it’s a decent example of his work, but until u devour “Power of the Dog” and the rest of its trilogy “Cartel” and “The Border” OR maybe read “The Force” or “City on Fire” you won’t know how amazing his stuff can be.

Twenty years have passed since Darth Bane, reigning Dark Lord of the Sith, demolished the ancient order devoted to the dark side and reinvented it as a circle of two: one Master to wield the power and pass on the wisdom, and one apprentice to learn, challenge, and ultimately usurp the Dark Lord in a duel to the death. But Bane’s acolyte, Zannah, has yet to engage her Master in mortal combat and prove herself a worthy successor. Determined that the Sith dream of galactic domination will not die with him, Bane vows to learn the secret of a forgotten Dark Lord that will assure the Sith’s immortality - and his own.

THE BEST STAR WARS TRILOGY!
Revisado: 06-19-22
I have read and listened to the Bane Trilogy multiple times, it remains my first recommendation when anyone asks what Star Wars novels to start with. Only because it is the coolest one!
Another one I recommend is Darth Plegius as well as Old Republic: Revan.
But this one… the 3 novels of this series, hands down my favorite!

First came the man: a young wanderer in a fatigue coat and long hair. Then came the legend, as John Rambo sprang from the pages of FIRST BLOOD to take his place in the American cultural landscape. This remarkable novel pits a young Vietnam veteran against a small-town cop who doesn't know whom he's dealing with - or how far Rambo will take him into a life-and-death struggle through the woods, hills, and caves of rural Kentucky.

They always say “the book was better” but maaaaannnn if u haven’t read this but like the movie, get ready for a ride that makes the film seem G rated in comparison!
Beyond that, the writing by Morel is bar none! A master of the thriller I can’t wait to red more from this guy!
The voice actor/reader did a super job too!

There are rappers who everyone loves and there are rappers who every rapper loves, and Corey Woods, a.k.a. Raekwon the Chef, is one of the few who is both. His versatile flow, natural storytelling, and evocative imagery have inspired legions of fans and a new generation of rappers. Raekwon is one of the founding members of Wu-Tang Clan, and his voice and cadence are synonymous with the sound that has made the group iconic since 1991.

Essential reading/listening for ANY Wu-ologist !
Revisado: 01-28-22
This was an eye opening and telling story about the life and career of one of the top tier Wu Tang Clan members, and one of my top 5 emcees of all time. I learned much I didn’t know about the youth and early days of Rae, I expected to hear mostly stuff I already knew from documentaries and interviews in the past, but I was pleasantly surprised. The later years and current relationships between Rae and RZA and other members was hard to hear but brutally honest, Rae pulled no punches and made no attempt to sugar coat anything.
My one and only gripe, and it’s a BIG ONE, was that Rae did not read this entire book. He did however bless us with some interview questions asked by his son which he answered in person at the end of each chapter which saved this audiobook imo. The only reason I withheld 1 star out of performance was that I needed to hear Rae tell it. That would’ve made this a perfect score!
So if u can get past the fact that Rae doesn’t read it fully and you are a long-time Wu Tang fan then I highly recommend this one.
