Five Years Earlier: Henry Dunne knows three things: that agreeing to host this raucous house party was a terrible idea, that he absolutely cannot show up to his nursing shift tomorrow with a hangover, and that the beautiful redhead in the corner will be sleeping in his bed tonight.

Nuanced and honest, lovely
Revisado: 08-30-24
My only quiibble with this book is the description of a romantic comedy. It's not a comedy, but it is a wonderful, sometimes heartbreaking, story of love, insecurities, regret, forgiveness, and ultimately, happily ever after.

Historia
At first, Logan Ramsay isn’t sure if anything’s different. He just feels a little . . . sharper. Better able to concentrate. Better at multitasking. Reading a bit faster, memorizing better, needing less sleep. But before long, he can’t deny it: Something’s happening to his brain. To his body. He’s starting to see the world, and those around him—even those he loves most—in whole new ways. The truth is, Logan’s genome has been hacked. And there’s a reason he’s been targeted for this upgrade.

Missed the mark
Revisado: 08-03-22
I loved the premise but the way it played out in the main character's development robbed the story of emotional depth. I wanted to know how it ended but I didn't really care about the main character anymore. Also, this made the finale of the book completely flat, no tension or suspense what so ever. He's risking his life but can turn off his emotions and tune out the physiological responses. He was never afraid, hyped up, etc., and neither was I.
I found myself tuning out when the ultra specifics of "this gene on that allele controlling X" happened for the umpteenth time. While I appreciate Crouch's desire to get the science right, he went overboard.
And... in this hyper scientific novel a scientist referred to a hypothesis as a theory. While the common usage of theory has come to mean an idea that is unproven, that is incorrect. An unproven idea is a hypothesis. A theory is a hypothesis that has been proved true by scientific study and evidence. Over time, a theory--if correct--will be proven correct again and again by additional scientific evidence. It's a little thing, but in a novel that went into so much depth to be correct with the genetics, every time theory was used incorrectly, by a character who is a SCIENTIST, it pulled me completely out of the story.
I hope Crouch takes a different direction moving forward and doesn't sacrifice what makes a novel (and a thriller especially) memorable: characters the reader/listener is emotionally invested in with tension and suspense that keeps them on the edge of their seat.

Historia
Kallix, a morose, laudanum-addicted, unschooled, slightly anorexic werewolf is still on the run. The youngest daughter of the Thane of the MacRinnalch Clan of werewolves, held responsible unfairly for the death of the Thane, and justifiably responsible for the deaths of a great many other werewolves, remains prohibited from returning to Scotland in order to maintain the uneasy peace that temporarily prevails in court, despite the endemic debauchery and degeneracy always threatening to again spiral out of control.

Historia
As the only Second Daughter born in centuries, Red has one purpose - to be sacrificed to the Wolf in the Wood in the hope he'll return the world's captured gods. Red is almost relieved to go. Plagued by a dangerous power she can't control, at least she knows that in the Wilderwood, she can't hurt those she loves. Again. But the legends lie. The Wolf is a man, not a monster. Her magic is a calling, not a curse. And if she doesn't learn how to use it, the monsters the gods have become will swallow the Wilderwood - and her world - whole.

Historia
It’s been two centuries since the boom of the Industrial Revolution sent the Victorian world into a devastating climatic shift. Now, chivalry is dead, and the frills and frivolities of the romantic era are no more than a fading memory. In Sagebrush Canyon, thirst rules, ignorance is power, and nothing is as it seems.

Four months have passed since the shadow stone fell into Kell's possession. Four months since his path crossed with Delilah Bard. Four months since Rhy was wounded and the Dane twins fell, and the stone was cast with Holland's dying body through the rift, and into Black London. In many ways, things have almost returned to normal, though Rhy is more sober, and Kell is now plagued by his guilt.

Disappointing change of narrator
Revisado: 01-16-21
While the story is great, the change of narration from the absolutely fantastic Steven Crossley still has me puzzled. The duet narration by Kramer and Reading is serviceable, but their performances pale in comparison to Crossley's in 'A Darker Shade of Magic,' which was compulsively listenable and left me unable to stop listening. I am not sure why the publisher decided to switch, but I found I was pulled out of the story for the entire audiobook by the disappointing switch of narration.

Darian Frey is down on his luck. He can barely keep his squabbling crew fed and his rickety aircraft in the sky. Even the simplest robberies seem to go wrong. It's getting so a man can't make a dishonest living any more. Enter Captain Grist. He's heard about a crashed aircraft laden with the treasures of a lost civilisation, and he needs Frey's help to get it. There's only one problem. The craft is lying in the trackless heart of a remote island, populated by giant beasts and subhuman monsters.

Historia
Frey is the captain of the Ketty Jay, leader of a small and highly dysfunctional band of layabouts. An inveterate womaniser and rogue, he and his gang make a living on the wrong side of the law, avoiding the heavily armed flying frigates of the Coalition Navy. With their trio of ragged fighter craft, they run contraband, rob airships, and generally make a nuisance of themselves. So a hot tip on a cargo freighter loaded with valuables seems like a great prospect for an easy heist and a fast buck. Until the heist goes wrong, and the freighter explodes.
