Historia
In seventh-century Ireland, a scholar and priest called Artt has a dream telling him to leave the sinful world behind. Taking two monks—young Trian and old Cormac—he rows down the river Shannon in search of an isolated spot on which to found a monastery. Drifting out into the Atlantic, the three men find an impossibly steep, bare island inhabited by tens of thousands of birds, and claim it for God. In such a place, what will survival mean?

Impressive Writing, Research and Narrator
Revisado: 12-07-24
In HAVEN, Emma Donoghue masterfully transports readers to a 7th-century island off the coast of Ireland, weaving a tale of fanatical faith, survival, and a search for meaning. Her research is astounding. The story follows three monks who venture to a remote island, driven by their Prior’s increasingly fanatical vision of spiritual purity. The harsh environment tests their physical and spiritual resolve, exposing the complexities of devotion and the limits of obedience.
The narrator, Aidan Kelly, enhances the novel’s emotional depth, making this story of survival and sacrifice immediate and compelling.
Haven is a haunting exploration of belief and the human condition, Highly recommended for fans of richly detailed and morally complex narratives.

In The Small and the Mighty, Sharon McMahon proves that the most remarkable Americans are often ordinary people who didn’t make it into the textbooks. Not the presidents, but the telephone operators. Not the aristocrats, but the schoolteachers. Through meticulous research, she discovers history’s unsung characters and brings their rich, riveting stories to light for the first time.

Historia
> The Chaperone is a captivating novel about the woman who chaperoned an irreverent Louise Brooks to New York City in 1922, and the summer that would change them both. Only a few years before becoming a famous actress and an icon for her generation, a 15-year-old Louise Brooks leaves Wichita to make it big in New York. Much to her annoyance, she is accompanied by a thirty-six-year-old chaperone who is neither mother nor friend. Cora Carlisle is a complicated but traditional woman with her own reasons for making the trip.

Historia
Actor David Suchet recalls his experience of playing Agatha Christie's world-famous detective, Hercule Poirot, for almost a quarter of a century. In the summer of 2013 David Suchet filmed his final scenes as Hercule Poirot. After 24 years in the role, he will have played the character in every story that Agatha Christie wrote about him (bar one, deemed unfilmable) and he will bid adieu to a role and a character that have changed his life.

Riveting, Honest and Powerful!
Revisado: 04-14-17
Where does Nevertheless rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
One of the best memoirs I have ever read/listened to. Every sentence sparkles with life and energy. Every emotion is honest and probing. The book is strangely moving, entertaining and uplifting. Mr. Baldwin is simply a master of communication, and I find myself hoping he adds writing novels to his many accomplishments and soaring talents.
What did you like best about this story?
Mr. Baldwin always finds the perfect word or phrase to express the real and the poetic.
Which scene was your favorite?
Many scenes stand out--actually all of it. It is a seamless, poignant book. The documentation of early life is haunting, shattering and lovely.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The loss of his father. The writing is rich with pain, regret and love.
Any additional comments?
I can't praise this book and its honest writing style enough. I truly hope Mr. Baldwin writes more books--fiction or nonfiction. He is one of the best writers I have read in years.

Historia
Bronx-born top turret-gunner Arthur Meyerowitz was on his second mission when he was shot down in 1943. He was one of only two men on the B-24 Liberator known as Harmful Lil Armful who escaped death or immediate capture on the ground. After fleeing the wreck, Arthur knocked on the door of an isolated farmhouse, whose owners hastily took him in. Fortunately, his hosts not only despised the Nazis but had a tight connection to the French resistance group Morhange and its founder, Marcel Taillandier.

Both Touching and Tragic
Revisado: 07-04-16
Where does The Lost Airman rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Top 10 in non-fiction.
What other book might you compare The Lost Airman to and why?
Shot Down by Steve Synder and Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. These books are similar, as they take place during WW2, but The Lost Airman is distinctive in its behind-the-scenes view of the French Resistance and their heart-breaking and admirable courage and sacrifice.
Have you listened to any of Jonathan Todd Ross’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, but an excellent narration.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. It's not a book you want to rush--but I always looked forward to getting back to it.
Any additional comments?
A moving account of Arthur Meyerowitz and all those who helped him get back home. I finished it on July 3rd, and was humbled and grateful for the brave sacrifice of so many great souls to preserve freedom and human dignity. The Lost Airman should be required reading in high schools.
