So boring
Revisado: 02-22-25
This book was flat and boring. The characters were contrived and one dimensional. There are almost 300 chapters so it is impossible to get into a rhythm with listening. Could not come close to finishing.

Historia
Between 2016 and 2018, Elissa Bassist saw over twenty medical professionals for a variety of mysterious ailments. Bassist had what millions of American women had: pain that didn’t make sense to doctors, a body that didn’t make sense to science, a psyche that didn’t make sense to mankind. But then an acupuncturist suggested some of her physical pain could be caged fury finding expression, and that treating her voice would treat the problem. It did.

Such a needed book!
Revisado: 04-07-24
Elissa Bassist does such an amazing job of calling BS (autocorrect won't let me type the real word) on the patriarchy we call our current culture. With sometimes painful, sometimes hilarious, and always self-revealing stories, backed up with loads of research, Bassist summarizes the price women pay for being women and the clearest way to self empowerment: through using our voices. Fantastic narration too.

Beautiful linked stories of complex characters
Revisado: 06-03-23
Addio, Love Monster very much deserves the award it received as the Best New Independent Press Fiction for 2022 from Chicago Writers Association. Christina Marrocco's nuanced reading of this book adds even more enjoyment to the experience. Although these stories take place in the fictional town of Mulberry Park, the specificity of the references to the town outside of Chicago in the mid-twentieth century evokes the feeling of being transported to another time and place.
These linked stories invite the listener into the intimate lives of the characters, into their hopes and heartbreaks. The author so carefully and imaginatively renders every precise detail of their lives, from their bouffant hairstyles and rolled-up shirtsleeves to their struggles with the complexity of relationships and the troubles of changing times, the reader can't help but root for each one of them.

Historia
Ruth McClintock is obsessed with Annie Oakley. For nearly a decade, she has been studying the legendary sharpshooter, convinced that a scarring childhood event was the impetus for her crusade to arm every woman in America. This search has cost Ruth her doctorate, a book deal, and her fiance - but finally it has borne fruit. She has managed to hunt down what may be a journal of Oakley's midlife struggles, including secret visits to a psychoanalyst and the desire for vengeance against the "Wolves", or those who have wronged her.

Good material not shaped into an effective story
Revisado: 01-21-19
This author had great subject matter but this was not well-edited at all. The compelling story of the sisters becomes a rambling abstraction on the author's own view of... everything. With solid editing, this could have been a much better book.

Historia
It’s 2011, and Samuel Andresen-Anderson—college professor, stalled writer—has a Nix of his own: his mother, Faye. He hasn’t seen her in decades, not since she abandoned the family when he was a boy. Now she’s re-appeared, having committed an absurd crime that electrifies the nightly news, beguiles the internet, and inflames a politically divided country. The media paints Faye as a radical hippie with a sordid past, but as far as Samuel knows, his mother was an ordinary girl who married her high-school sweetheart.
