Historia
What makes “cults” so intriguing and frightening? What makes them powerful? The reason why so many of us binge Manson documentaries by the dozen and fall down rabbit holes researching suburban moms gone QAnon is because we’re looking for a satisfying explanation for what causes people to join - and more importantly, stay in - extreme groups. We secretly want to know: could it happen to me? Amanda Montell’s argument is that, on some level, it already has.

Misleading title
Revisado: 12-10-24
This book is about the language of marketing, not cults. She dives a little into the topics of cult, but it’s more about how leaders gain their audience through the use of language. Also, Amanda, your hate for Trump is palpable and comparing him to Jim Jones is laughable. I’m not on the Trump train, but whenever an author shows their emotions it makes ALL their work not credible.

Not for me.
Revisado: 07-10-24
The narrator comes off as whiny and the material is so redundant. This could’ve been a four hour book. The research was cherry picked and the author bashes the US without ever addressing real issues that American parents have. Lastly, I wish parents would just get back to scrapbooking instead of wasting everyone’s time with long novels about how amazing their kids are.

Read People like a Book isn’t a normal book on body language or facial expressions. Yes, it includes all of those things, as well as new techniques on how to truly detect lies in your everyday life, but this book is more about understanding human psychology and nature. We are who we are because of our experiences and pasts, and this guides our habits and behaviors more than anything else. Parts of this book are like the most interesting and applicable psychology textbook you’ve ever used. Take a look inside yourself and others!

Good book. It had some great takeaways. The narrator had a nice voice, but I found his pauses and inflection hard to listen to.

Historia
Did you know women walk more, eat less, socialize more, meet more men, dance more, and flirt more when they're ovulating? Or that PMS may have evolved to get rid of boyfriends with unfit sperm? Behind the "fickle" differences in what women find sexy about men, or what they like to wear, there's a hidden adaptive intelligence shaped over eons. Rather than making women irrational - as the conventional and irredeemably sexist wisdom goes - the female hormonal cycle has been exquisitely fine-tuned to give women the advantages they needed to succeed in our ancestral environments, and perhaps also today.

Meh
Revisado: 02-20-20
I’m not in the real estate business, but if I was I can see how this would be super beneficial. Performance wise, I always like it when the authors narrate their own books, and Manny did a great job. I’m not sure I got a lot of take away’s from this book, however. I feel like 75% of the book is him telling his life story and putting it in a chapters so his kids can have his legacy on paper.

What did I just listen to?
Revisado: 09-12-19
This has so much potential, but I can’t get over the structure of this book. To sum it up, it’s a story about four characters that you have absolutely no interest in, and you follow them through this “teacher to student” long, dragged out, completely unrealistic “adventure”. There is the billionaire (a surfer dude), the spellbinder (a person of magic), the entrepreneur (a damsel in distress), and the artist (a hippie). It takes you until chapter 14 to actually get to the good stuff, where there are actionable take aways. I almost gave up on this book, which I never do, and I found myself thinking 97% of the time ‘omg, what the hell am I listening to’. If you like dreamy quotes, magical stories, and fluff, you might enjoy this.
Save your time (and money) and just google Robin Sharma, he has his best content online.

Food. There's plenty of it around, and we all love to eat it. So why should anyone need to defend it? Because in the so-called Western diet, food has been replaced by nutrients, and common sense by confusion—most of what we’re consuming today is longer the product of nature but of food science. The result is what Michael Pollan calls the American Paradox: The more we worry about nutrition, the less healthy we see to become.

This is a great book, but there is so much information in it. Because it’s so dense it makes listening to the book hard to follow. I’m going to order to hard copy and reread it though because it has great information. Also, the voice over guy is rather annoying. Every sentence is read super dramatic and theatrical.

Life changing
Revisado: 08-22-19
And, life saving. This book has giving me back my life, and I finally feel FREEEEEE!!!!! I finished this book the week of my birthday, and resolved not to have one drink on my birthday...that’s pretty amazing! It was my birthday gift to myself, a new me. AND, the day I finished it my husband and I had a boozy work event to go to. Normally I would drink at this event, just to ease my tension because it can be socially awkward and uncomfortable (I married the boss, so all eyes are usually on us/me at this event). Not only did I not have a drink, I actually enjoyed myself and the situation...sober?! Insane!! Thank you, Annie, for giving me back control and freedom. I’m so excited for this new life, the possibilities seem endless now.
