Historia
In 1851, Father Jean Marie Latour comes to serve as the Apostolic Vicar to New Mexico. What he finds is a vast territory of red hills and tortuous arroyos, American by law but Mexican and Indian in custom and belief. In the almost forty years that follow, Latour spreads his faith in the only way he knows—gently, all the while contending with an unforgiving landscape, derelict and sometimes openly rebellious priests, and his own loneliness. Out of these events, Cather gives us an indelible vision of life unfolding in a place where time itself seems suspended.

beautiful language and relationships
Revisado: 08-11-17
Willa Cather uses the most beautiful descriptions. This book is very character focused and portrays the beautiful friendship off two priests in the harsh southwest. It's not a plot driven book though, so it moves slowly.

Great! But... writing poor in spots
Revisado: 02-16-16
I have only listened to this book and the first book. I am liking it so far. It has strong and complex characters, twisting plot lines, and so much more. I really do like this series.
That being said, I have to admit that I get so annoyed with the writing of the thought process of the main character. She is constantly reminding herself that she is the King's guard, and she protects. This is great, but the author uses the same words, the same reasoning every time Alexa brings thinks about her job. Alexa seems to have to original thoughts when it comes to the guard, no further reasoning for what she does other than "it's what her purpose is." And she thinks about this A LOT. I have no problem with the character having this constantly on her mind, but sometimes it feels like every 5 pages or so I'm listening to the same internal monologue, literally copied and pasted. It drives me nuts. People don't think like that, and it completely takes me out of the world and magic the author has done such a great job to create thus far.
Anyways, I thought I would add another opinion. It is a really great book, but some flaws in the expression of the characters. (In my opinion.)

Historia
Calwyn used to be exceptional. She was the most talented of all the chanters of Tremaris, and she'd fought hard to become their leader. But then there was an accident, and the magic inside her went silent. Where there once was power, now there is nothing. Her whole life, the future she had planned with Darrow, has somehow slipped away.

New to fantasy
Revisado: 05-30-15
I have never been into fantasy, but after I read the first book I was hooked. the entire series kept me on the edge of my seat. This last book was particularly gripping. I was in despair with all the characters as they faced their terrible realities. I don't want top give away spoilers, so I'll end it there. i definitely recommend!
