Historia
After a lifetime of kissing frogs, Roxie Pratt has given up on finding her own fairytale romance. That is, until she meets her very own Prince Charming, Mark Wright, and he sweeps Roxie off her feet! So when Mark finally gets down on one knee and pops the question, there’s only one thing left to do: meet the family! And when everything has been picture-perfect so far, what could possibly go wrong?

A little disappointed…
Revisado: 09-09-23
I love Portia MacIntosh’s books. They’re so lighthearted with happy endings…it’s a nice, little pick-me-up. This book, though, was a tough one. While Karen Cass did an excellent job narrating and bringing the story to life, the characters were such a challenge. Roxie, the main character, is incredibly difficult to like. While I wouldn’t say she’s a bad person, she is incredibly needy, she doesn’t necessarily consider her partner’s feelings when writing her articles and despite denying it, she comes off almost as a desperate sex pest. If my fiancé kept making advances toward me at my parent’s house while my whole family was there, after I explained to them how conservative they are, I would feel really unheard and kind of like they were being disrespectful to me and my family. Just because it’s a woman acting this way, it doesn’t make the behavior acceptable. Then you have the mom and Bea and they are just rude to the point where it becomes tedious and annoying that no one ever calls them out. Love Portia MacIntosh, will always be up to reading/listening to her books, but I could’ve given this one a miss.

Historia
Lottie just knows that her boyfriend is going to propose during lunch at one of London’s fanciest restaurants. But when his big question involves a trip abroad, not a trip down the aisle, she’s completely crushed. So when Ben, an old flame, calls her out of the blue and reminds Lottie of their pact to get married if they were both still single at 30, she jumps at the chance. No formal dates - just a quick march to the altar and a honeymoon on Ikonos, the sun-drenched Greek island where they first met years ago. Their family and friends are horrified. Fliss, Lottie’s older sister, knows that Lottie can be impulsive - but surely this is her worst decision yet.

Characters that you wished could get killed off…
Revisado: 05-12-23
Don’t get me wrong…I love Sophie Kinsella’s books (as well as her books penned under her actual name - the Madeleine Wickham books). However, I’ve been re-listening to audiobooks I listened to years ago to help me watch less TV, and I came around to two Sophie Kinsella audiobooks in a row : I’ve Got Your Number and this one. Hearing them forced me to come to a realization…as good as Sophie Kinsella’s writing is, she can write the MOST insufferable characters in the world - particularly female leads.
Fliss isn’t too bad…as an older sibling with an 11 year gap in age who took on a pseudo-parental role with their sibling, I can somewhat understand her. However, Lottie and Ben are the most impulsive, unbelievably irresponsible, selfish and annoying characters in the world. The level to which they are contrarians (just for the sake of doing the opposite of what someone suggests or says, even if it makes no sense) is so infuriating that you genuinely wish that they could somehow be killed off in the story; and have the book end with just Fliss and Lorcan because they’re the only people with a modicum of relatability, likability and common sense. At least the things they do are well intentioned. It gets to the point that when Lottie is talking, just hearing her voice becomes grating.
While the premise of the book is really interesting, the characters make it almost painful to listen to. As much as I hate to say it, I’d skip this one and go for one of Sophie Kinsella’s other audiobooks.
