An interesting historical novel!
Revisado: 09-01-24
“Pushing Back the Desert: Operation Ajax” by Gordon Zuckerman is a compelling historical novel set in the late 1950s during the Eisenhower Era. This first book in Zuckerman’s second trilogy blends true events with fiction, focusing on the covert operation known as Ajax. The New Sentinels, a group of humanitarian visionaries, are tasked with thwarting British and American oil interests that aim to topple Iran’s Parliamentary Government, reinstate the exiled Shah, and seize control of Iran’s vast oil industry.
The novel explores the ethical question: What is one’s duty to the greater good? It challenges readers to consider whether those born into power and resources have a responsibility to fight evil, even at great personal cost. The Sentinels face the potential loss of family, constant fear, and the risk of death as they navigate this moral landscape.
Zuckerman excels in blending historical accuracy with engaging fiction. The characters are well-developed, and the story maintains a good pace, keeping readers invested without overwhelming them with details. The narrator’s voice adds depth, guiding us through the intricate plot.
The central theme of duty versus personal sacrifice resonates throughout the series. The heroes’ journey reflects the struggles of many who are called to serve a greater cause. Their resolve is tested, their convictions solidified, and amidst uncertainty, they seek answers to the ethical dilemmas posed by their mission.
In conclusion, “Pushing Back the Desert: Operation Ajax” is more than a historical novel; it is a reflection on the responsibilities of those with the power to effect change. Through its engaging storyline and richly developed characters, the book offers a poignant commentary on the eternal battle between the pursuit of power and the quest for the greater good.

A fast and interesting read!
Revisado: 02-02-23
I enjoyed this fast paced crime thriller! The plot is intricately crafted and will keep the reader guessing! The book features a diverse cast of characters and a morally gray main character. The story is plot driven but has plenty of character development. This story will keep you guessing until the end!

A great read!
Revisado: 01-25-23
The Accidental Suffragist was a very pleasant surprise, it wasn’t on my radar at all but I’m so glad I read it. The story follows Helen Fox who starts to work with a suffragist group after her daughter is killed in the Triangle Shirtwaist fire.
This sweeping story follows Helen and her family through the early 1900s and WWI years and showcases the experiences of working class families and the suffragist movement. I love when historical fiction is based on real life events. This story starts with the tragedy of the Triangle Shirtwaist fire and includes other events such as the imprisonment of suffragists at Occoquan Workhouse and the night of terror that took place there. Helen is the type of strong female character that I love and I really enjoyed the development of her character. Throughout the story Helen grows from a struggling factory worker and housewife into a confident woman with a clear purpose in life.
The authors writing in this book captivating and beautiful and the ending was just perfect! I really enjoyed the narration by Sarah Molly-Christensen, I felt that she really embodied the main character. The Accidental Suffragist is one of those novels that will hold a special place in your heart. If you are a fan of historical fiction you will definitely want to add this beautiful story to your TBR.
